Someone told me yesterday that you would get a better exchange rate by chaning sterling into dollars and then taking dollars to Spain to exchange into euros! Would this work? would you end up with more euros rather than just buying them with sterling. I've no intention of doing this I have enough trouble calculating how much things are in 'real money' when I'm abroad anyway. I'm just curious

Total rubbish - you would lose out on two lots of commission/exchange rate spreads for a start which is 10% minimum.

I done some calculations for this because a previous poster had mentioned this, however i cant find it now.

Anyway the conclusion was that doing it would have lost you £6'ish for every £50 exchanged this way, based on whatever the hell the exchange rate was then, however its easily worked out for yourself just grab a calculator and pop to travelex.co.uk and do the maths yourself.

So in closing whoever told you this is winding you up.

however if you came back to the UK from the US with dollars and was going on a spanish beach type holiday i think it is a good move to take the dollars and convert them into euros in the med. resort rather than changing them back to sterling via a UK institution

Sunday Times today detailed https://fairfx.com/ who are offering $1.955 for dollars loaded onto their pre-paid Mastercard.

Card is free for purchase of over £500.

    Seems like a good deal.

    It's currently at around 1.91

Is this set to decrease now? better to get them now rather than later do you think?

    Many Thanks

Like gambling... could go up or down, you can't really get safe advice on that.

I got dollars for my holiday in DR on 14th April 08, and the rate was 1.9 then so I can't see there being a dramatic change.

Someone has suggested previously getting half now and half just before your trip... but who knows whether that will pay off or not! Unless you're planning on getting 50k's worth or something it's not gonna make that much difference.

Roll on my hols I should stop frequenting this area of the site because I find myself get wound up by the most stupid reccuring questions.

I feel a sticky coming saying "if you think anyone knows what the exchange rate will be next week/month/year we would all be millionaires"

On another subject does anyone know when richersounds sale starts and if i go in there and ask nicely will they give me a £1000 tv for £50?
