I have Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox Browser and Thunderbird for email - I have been using them and everything is so much faster than before - thank you.
The HP printer icon is there although I have not tried printing yet. Something is updating. I'll wait until it finishes and follow through on the links you have given.

Did you run a Custom Install during the installation of Office 2007 to ensure that you only install the programs that you use?
You have to be doubly careful when installing anything, including browsers, as you should always go into the equivalent of 'advanced options' during installation and/or to take notice of what else will be installed alongside the program of your choice. Decline to install additional programs/malware.
These are the things that embed themselves on your device and eventually slow it down to a crawl.
It seems that you are a bit hasty in installing programs before the basic installation has completed.
You installed Office, Thunderbird and Firefox on Windows 8 and now again on 8.1 before even completing the installation of the Drivers.0 -

I'm sure I did not Custom Install - as I would not know exactly what to choose.
I know I did not go into advanced options during installation - although I know to untick, eg to prevent Chrome automatically downloading, being my Default Browser and Search Engine. I hope I have not installed anything to slow this new system down - should I completely uninstall Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007? I only use Microsoft Word and Excel and did not know I could choose only certain parts.
I may have to go out and, if I don't manage to do it first, I will go over your recent posts (# 48, # 49 and #50) and helpful links to work on when I come back home later this afternoon, thank you.

Yes - I seem to have got myself into a bit of a muddle - I do apologise. Should I (when I get back in later) uninstall everything I have installed? I have not, so far, touched the links in Posts #49 or 50# .

You should run this; https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html and follow the instructions to see which Drivers are offered to you. Let me know which it offers before installing the Drivers offered.
I have to say - I do feel a bit feeble. I ran the above link and was scared to click on things after the first one said 'install' without knowing what it was. I'll hopefully have better concentration later this afternoon.

I hope I'm not losing the place here as I do feel out of my depth - despite excellent help. When I first clicked on the link it said: 'Oops .... a problem, try again' Then it suggested another link ( https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24345/Intel-Driver-Support-Assistant?product=128824) and, with hesitation, I clicked on it and this is what I found - I hope it makes sense - I have installed nothing:
"Available Downloads Windows 10, 32-bit*
Windows 10, 64-bit*
Windows 8.1*
Windows 8.1, 32-bit*
Windows 8.1, 64-bit*

Language: Multi language
Size: 13.26 MB
MD5: 0b245ea905233a9cc549c4b3dfc7e2b0"
Then, somehow, there was a link I clicked on and it said 2 out of date drivers, 0 missing drivers, 64 devices scanned. View Driver Scan Details; I took a Screenshot but it was too big and not allowed to post here.
Detect optimization issues: 17 unoptimized internet settings, 47 unoptimized Windows settings - View optimization details.
I'm so apologetic - but I'm really struggling - I'll understand if you want to give up as I'm not doing this at all well - I don't understand what I am trying to do.

No worries.
We can skip all of the Intel stuff and revert to simply installing the Drivers from the links provided in post #50. You can skip 48 & 49.
But perhaps you can go to the Control panel and un-install the Intel program you just installed, if it was installed. https://www.dummies.com/computers/operating-systems/windows-8/add-or-remove-programs-in-windows-8/
Also Office enterprise, as it installs way too many programs with the standard install.
Then you can re-install it, but this time choosing to make the programs you don't need to install 'not available' for install; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p2gNe--Hcx4
Next to the Drivers in post #50.
You download and save the first in the list and then un-zip/uncompress the .zip file (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzBF377jwto) Then run the .exe file that is within the newly uncompressed folder, by double clicking on the .exe file and following the instruction.
Once complete, do the same with the next in line until all Drivers are installed.0 -

This is all so good of you, - and giving so much time to it EveryWhere, at such a very early hour too.
I'm just about to make a start now and, with breaks (give my brain recovery time!) I'll carefully work my way through it all. I'll post back later, of course. Thank you.

I had no idea we were on different time zones. It's 11.55 am here in Scotland. Thank you so very much for your patience.
Although I'm going at a snail's pace I am getting there, thank you. So far this morning I have uninstalled the Intel program, have uninstalled Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 and reinstalled following 'Custom Install' - the YouTube link helped me 100% thanks. I have installed Microsoft Word and Excel as that is all I use.
Next (after a wee break and bit of early lunch) I'll keep going by downloading and saving the first in the list (following your instructions) and, hopefully, keep going until all the Drivers you have linked to are installed.

We will install them in that order later.
Firstly, the Intel program to run and about which to report back.
I tried to download the first one on the list (3) and after about 14 minutes it said download failed. I tried again (14 minutes) and it said 'Failed .....zip is invalid)
I'll go on to try with the second on the list to see what happens.
Thank you.
