    Actually, you weren't going to use those Recovery DVDs, as they only install Windows 8 and not 8.1. In addition it also installs all of the the unnecessary Toshiba software that contributes to the slowing down of your machine.
    We were to install Windows 8.1 Update 3 by utilising the Win8.1_EnglishInternational_x64 DVD

    Seems that you jumped the gun a bit. :)

    Put the old HDD in the caddy. It can only slot in one way.

    Oh - so sorry - I really did jump the gun. Can it be remedied at all? I'll put the old HDD in the caddy once I have learned from your YouTube link.

    I have everything you suggested stored safely. Will post again tomorrow, thank you very much.

    I'm back much quicker than I thought, EveryWhere, as your YouTube link was easy to follow. I have put the old HDD in the caddy and I'll be grateful to know what to do next, thanks.

    It can be remedied. Since you will have to update to Windows 8.1 at some point in the near future, it makes sense to perhaps have a go at clean installing it now.

    Use the method shown by grumpycrab to boot from the Windows 8.1 DVD.

    I have done that just now and from PC Settings I have Windows 8.1 - it seemed to take a lot less time than when I installed Windows 8 with the three Recovery Media DVDs. The W8.1_English_x64.iso was just one DVD.

    I really would never have managed any of this without all the great help received.

    What should I do with the Caddy now that the old HDD is in it - please?

    I'll log off soon and, tomorrow, will enjoy my new system - thank you again.

    Their may be some Drivers that you need to install if you ran a clean install of Windows 8.1.
    When you type Device Manager into the Search function, you may see something like this;
    device-manager-100226208-orig.png

    If that is the case we'll need to install the appropriate Drivers. Drivers are software that acts as a translator between the hardware and the operating system.

    The old HDD contains your personal data. It's just a matter of attaching it to the Toshiba via the supplied USB cable and navigating around using Windows Explorer to the folders that contain your pictures, documents and even email back-up etc
    If it's like this; New-2-5-SATA-to-USB-Cable.jpg_350x350.jpg

    The plug with the short cable supplies extra power. So plug both into the laptop. The other goes to the external caddy.

    Machine speedier?

    I'll get on with that, thanks EveryWhere. I noticed in Devices and Printers that the icon for my W 8.1 laptop has a yellow triangle with black exclamation mark - troubleshoot. - 'Unknown device - no driver.' I tried clicking and following 'troubleshooting' but I was not able to find what to do about it. (edit ......) - I have just followed as above under 'other devices' and it is there as unknown right enough.

    I'll follow your directions to see if a driver can be found would you let me know how to do it, please?

    Yes - the machine is very much speedier and I'm so pleased, thanks. My head is spinning a bit with all this although it's a great learning experience and so, good to have all this excellent forum help.

    Does the Toshiba have Internet access?

    You should run this; https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/detect.html and follow the instructions to see which Drivers are offered to you. Let me know which it offers before installing the Drivers offered.

    Once we have ascertained which Intel Drivers are to be installed, we'll go forward with finding and installing any other Drivers.

    Info here;

    http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/install-20130926143548.zip

    You may need to download, un-zip and install numbers; 3,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 & 13 using the link below and the details of your Toshiba device....beginning with Portables

    http://www.toshiba.co.uk/support/drivers/laptops/

    We'll see.

    This post for reference only, as the Drivers are listed below.

    Thanks, EveryWhere. I have internet access on the Toshiba (on it just now.)
    I have Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox Browser and Thunderbird for email - I have been using them and everything is so much faster than before - thank you.

    The HP printer icon is there although I have not tried printing yet. Something is updating. I'll wait until it finishes and follow through on the links you have given.
