The mortgage advisor I dealt with pointed out that my life & critical illness cover was inadequate to cover me for the sum and term of the new mortgage, so I've cancelled my old policy and found a new one online this afternoon. It's costing me around £11 more a month, but, as I'm on my own and have DS, I think it's important to ensure the mortgage will be paid off if anything happens to me.

The new mortgage is going to cost me £167.03 more per month than my current one :(. It has cut a year off the term of the mortgage though. Small victories and all that...

I will need to stay in control of my money and really effectively use my savings pots to cover for annual bills and unexpected issues. I'm thankful I eventually got to grips with YNAB and use it almost religiously as it's been the single most helpful tool in managing my money.
Goodness knows if I'm going to be able to overpay the mortgage at all, but I will certainly try my best.

Monday again. :( I had a nice weekend though, got a few bits done including mass clearing out the big outbuilding, getting rid of all the old paint and junk left by the previous owners of this house. OH kindly helped me and took it all to the tip for recycling.

I bought a couple of other DIY bits needed, spending around £13. I had a few trips to supermarkets, picking up YS items and spending minimal £’s but getting a lot for my money. :)

My sister kindly paid for DS and I to go to the cinema, so we went to see the grinch at the weekend which was fun. Still can’t believe the price though - no change from £20 for the two of us. We don’t do cinema food or drink either, I just take a drink for DS and a snack if he’s hungry. Shocking prices.

Unfortunately this house seems to torment me and the microwave was this weekend’s casualty. It’s kaput, not fixable like the tumble dryer unfortunately. :( £69 later, I have one on order. I could have got one heater, but wanted one that my plates would actually fit into...
The kaput one is less than two years old too. :( I’ve taken the money to buy a new one out of the house moving pot, but have managed to put around £55 of that back in already thanks to some craft sales.

I’m just cooking toad in the hole for DS’s tea with some YS chipolatas bought yesterday. I’ve made a big tray of it so will freeze another 3 portions or so for use at another time. OH and I will be having jacket potatoes and some salad later.

The house is causing me more concerns tonight. It feels like living on a knife edge here, I can’t wait until we move now. :(

Well, the toad in the hole was a write off. :( It is a dairy free version and refused to rise, despite the oil being hot. I managed to make DS a nice dinner from the bits that had risen with lots of sausages, veg and gravy, but there’s none to freeze.
I did manage to cook the jacket potatoes whilst the oven was on though.

Urgh, I’m tired. I didn’t sleep great all weekend and it’s definitely catching up with me. Hopefully tonight will bring better sleep.

  • Once confidence has been lost in something, be that a car or house, the sooner things move forward, the better.

Glad you were able to have fun at the cinema.

  • I know it will feel like an age, but soon all of this will just be a bad memory - you and ds will be living happily in a safe, new home that is all yours.
  • Please may I ask how the house got sold if it's unsafe?

It’s not unsafe Sayschezza, i’ve had that checked out by a surveyor. It unfortunately needs a lot of intrusive work doing that I can’t afford to do as we are talking huge amounts of money. It has also been bought by someone who is aware of the issues as it has been sold with full transparency, hence why I have lost so much money on it.

  • Thanks MandO. Curiosity got the better of me there. I love older houses with a bit/lot of character but unfortunately I am too old to renovate another so 8 years ago I settled to downsizing into a 5 year old 2bedroom which was probably built with 1st time buyers in mind. Still feel a bit of a pang when I see older properties on the market but am resigned to being sensible. It's great to know the maintenance costs are low and it is a cosy home now so don't be too despondent about your new build future home as it will all be for the best in the long run. Good luck.
