My rented house had decking with hedgehogs living under it :-) We looked after a friend's labrador for a while and he was forever sniffing around after them...
Sorry to go against the grain, but I really don't like decking! I worry about maintaining it long-term and I can also imagine it becoming unfashionable... I like good old slabs of stone myself :-)Mortgage | £145,000Unsecured Debt | [strike]£7,000[/strike] £0 Lodgers | |0 -

I'm with you, I hate decking. If you lay it next to your house, you're just making a nice, dry and snug home for mice, rats and cockroaches - not the sort of neighbours you want to have 'popping in' for a cup of coffee.
Yoiu don't get many creatures living under slabs of stone - especially if they are laid on concrete!Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)

Oh, I don't know... I think I've dated a few in my time.
Seriously though - the house we are buying has decking and it had never occurred to me that it would encourage mice and nasties. The people we are buying from use the under-decking space as storage - kids bikes etc. Is there anything I can do to discourage unwelcome guests, short of taking it all down?↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face

If decking is done PROPERLY! Then there are no gaps in it to allow little beasts in and there is a membrane over the undelying ground to stop little beasts burrowing up through.
If they cant do a proper job then thats their problem!0 -

Like you care! YOU didn't even remember to watch it this week - that's how much YOU care!
BTW, this weeks viewing of PL was completely marred by the mental image you painted last week. I spent all of the programme pushing away unwelcome thoughts of you, with a glass of JD in one hand and a box of tissues by your side. It was traumatic.↑ Things I wouldn't say to your face

Unfortunately, in the pursuit of larger profits, how many property developers or landscape gardeners would do a proper job, after all they're not the ones putting up with the creepy crawlies.
Also, rats can gnaw through bricks and hardwood, so a little bit of membrane or the actual softwood of the decking will pose no problem for them to get through.
Here is an article that covers this issue:
