Ginger is an easy plant to grow and care for, plant exactly like dahlias or canna, it grows easily. Buy a proper rhizome though ( available in spring) or a plant from garden centre. It needs sun and a good soil, add compost. Good luck, need any more help no prob
  • When you have grown your ginger, to keep it more or less indefinately, peel, mince it up in the processor or grate it - put it in a small jar and cover it with oil - doesn't have to be an expensive oil but it must cover the ginger as the air will decay it. You can keep it in the fridge for as long as you like. I just cut down any oil in the recipe slightly to account for the oil with the ginger. Its very convenient as well as its already peeled and mince for you.

I'd like to have a go at this but don't know how. Any tips? Is it even possible in the UK?

I did grow it, in pot indoors, but it never really prospered and I certainly never got any decent root from it

Made a bit of an unusual plant, worth a go in the same category as avacado stones etc, do not expect much and see what what happens

We have grown ginger quite successfully in a pot of sandy soil (half & half sand/compost) It is quite slow growing, but it makes a nice houseplant in the meantime.

3 of 4 pieces of ginger in an unopened pack from Mr T have grown nice sprouts. In my New Zealand childhood, the stuff grew canna lily-like. Should I pot them in compost here? Leave sprouts exposed or buried? Aftercare?
All help and advice will be appreciated.

Just thought this might be of interest to others. :p

Apparently these are really easy to grow.

Lemongrass: buy a stalk from the supermarket. Stick in a glass of water and place in a warm spot. Change water daily. When shoots appear, repot. Needs lots of water but also good drainage.
