You've already got a BT based landline, you don't need to do anything else, just wait for the transfer to go through.

Ok, so I guess I'll just lose my broadband from Monday and BT will get in touch about paying them?

I think you're the one that missed it, it's right there in Martin's article:

Almost all standard broadband providers require a BT landline (or for you to take out their own phone option), it's not unusual.

Hang on, I'm thoroughly confused. Martin says the cheapest way to get landline and broadband is to get Primus Landline and Plusnet broadband. BUT PLusnet says you have to have a PLusnet or BT landline, so surely Primus wouldn't count? This is what I meant before, I didn't misread this!

How do you think the BB will reach your property if you don't have a phone line?

You need a line, and whether you use it or not you will have to pay a rental for that service.

Erm. I said I have a phone line just that it's not active. So it's not a question of how BB will reach the property but how much they'll charge me for it.

I assumed that with the unbundling other providers could offer BB only without telephonic services being supplied on the line.
I guess from your answer that's not the case so the minimum bill from O2 is approx 15pounds a month for BB + phone.
  • Hi

My two-penneth...as an impoverished mature student I signed with Plusnet to provide the phone line (Primus to provide broadband) as suggested by this site. They have mistakenly billed me for two months but we got that sorted, and its true they are wonderfully cheap and seemed ok until 3 weeks ago when the line went down. I am still waiting for it to be repaired, the problem is somewhere in the exchange, or maybe its not - no one seems to know or care. I have phoned and emailed them till Im blue in the face, they don't have any idea when it will be fixed. Twice they have called the mobile to say its been repaired, when it hasn't been. They are evasive, unhelpful and frankly will tell you anything they can to get rid of you such as "you are now a priority" and "it will be done in the next 24 hours". I am now 3 days from handing in my dissertation, which has been extremely difficult to finish without proper broadband access, which I am still having to pay for. Primus are cheap yes, but I wouldn't ever EVER recommend them to anyone, unless your blood pressure can take it.
  • Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this. I'm trying to use the Cheap Broadband Finder. The page opens, I put in my postcode, it finds the companies I can use and then immediately the page closes itself down (and any other tabs that are open on that browser). Have tried it several times and trying to access it from diferent links but it always does it.
    Help!!
    Thanks
    Lynne
  • In January i signed up with Primus saver broadband & home phone. Today I have cancelled it!!! I was told in January that I would hear within 10 days of when they could install my phoneline, I never heard of them, I was told I would receive a modem with 2 weeks... it never arrived. For the last 6 days I have tried to contact them via the phone, thankgod its a free phone number! Everyday, at various times during the day I have been on hold CONSTANTLY for at least 45 minutes, listening to the same message, obviously on a loop. I emailed them to ask them to contact me, 3 days later I received an email, telling me the landline will be installed in March & can I please contact them to pay £69. I emailed back to say that as I have no faith in their ability to provide me with a decent service, i am cancelling my account with them.

I would NEVER recommend anyone go with PRIMUS. You definatley get what you pay for with this company!!!

  • Cheap Mobile Broadband in Spain and globally

Found this new dongle, called abroadband, amazingly cheap prices, 50p/mb and covers worlwide countries, ideal for the EU.

    abroadband.com

Just started this month but looks impressive, 80% cheaper than uk roaming prices. Just avoid MB eaters like youtube and mp3 sites and your onto a winner I think.

Doesn't look cheap at all. What with all the images on websites etc would easily cost you £5 (don't have Euro symbol on keyboard :) ) just visiting a few sites. Only use this would be for would be txt e-mails that contain no images.

I agree, but if you only want it for primarily e-mails and browsing set your internet options to block images or use a data limiter program then you can avoid any hefty bills.
