Is it just me, or does the final section (cheapest standalone broadband package) of the MSE article on 'cheap broadband' read a bit .. well .. strange!Imprudent granting of credit is bound to prove just as ruinous to a bank as to any other merchant.

Yes very strange Close what that all about then?
Obviously not been proof read has it? Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -
I'd just come to the end of my madasafish broadband contract and was looking around for something cheaper than my £14.99 for up to 8MB speed and 5GB download limit package. But when I rang them up to get my MAC code I was instantly offered the same package for 12mths @ £12.99 per month plus a free wireless router (all I had to pay was £5.95 P&P). Next time I phoned I said I'd seen offers for new customers getting 6mths @ £9.99, then £12.99 for remaining 6mths and guess what? I was offered 12mths @ £9.99! Excellent!!!
Pretty good eh?
Plus, no waiting around for new service provider to come online - seamless transition!:j:rotfl::T Whoopee!
Madasafish have been very good with free wireless router, 5Gb limit, and good service, but charging me a whopping £17.99 per month!!
I emailed them asking to propose a new offer since they were overpriced based on the competition adn they offered me £9.99 for the first 6 months then £17.99 for the next 6 months.
i phoned them to get my MAC and told them i would rather stay with them if they could offer a better deal - they offered me the same 9.99/17.99 deal and I said I would only pay 9.99 for the full 12 months, they transferred me to a manager and approved it!
Then I noticed this at the bottom of a madasafish email:PlusNet plc trading as Madasafish
and remembered I was informed recently of a takeover. mistery solved!0 -

EDIT:
Just want to point out that the above posting and my replies to it which follow were originally in a little thread of their own that has subsequently been integrated by the unseen hands into this one.
In their new context here, the fact that it was an individual response to an individual poster and addressed his specific questions is not clear. It could look - transposed to this thread - like a generalised lecture to the world at large instead of an attempt by me quietly and inconspicuously to help someone in his own little thread who had a problem.
There are lots of people here who know far more about these things than I ever shall and are kind enough to share their knowledge with us. I wouldn't want any of them to think I was elevating myself to anything other than a fellow struggler at the bottom who came to the MSE forum to do his own research, was (am) very grateful for all the information that others have posted here, and was just trying to pass on to a fellow foot-soldier some of what I had learned!

Shely33,
Your question is just not as simple as the manner in which you pose it!
You don't, believe me, want "the cheapest broadband"; you'll hate it and it will drive you to distraction.
For your own benefit, do some research on here - it's what this forum primarily exists for. Work out what your needs actually are: the times of day at which you'll want to use it, the amount of stuff you'll want to download and when you'll want to do it; which ISPs and services are actually available to your premises and which ones aren't. Essential things like that.
If you don't do this, you'll wind up locked into a long contract for a cheap but diabolical and unreliable Internet service with an ISP that doesn't want to know about it when you call its "Customer Service" on a crackly and expensive telephone link to somewhere on the other side of the world.
As many here are - check out their grief and despair. :wall:
Two helpful links to help you in your research are:
http://www.samknows.com/broadband/
which will tell you what's available to you, and
http://www.thinkbroadband.com/
which will help you to compare what is.
Then read the threads in this forum which discuss their relative merits.
If you really want to be spoon-fed, start by looking at PlusNet and O2 - but, truthfully, only you can work out what's best for you because others can't gauge your own particular needs and alternatives.
Quite apart from anything else, if you're starting from scratch with a new telephone line you may want to consider getting a combined deal for telephone plus broadband (plus mobile? plus TV?). So, do the research.
You'll find people here will be kind and helpful to you once you've done your basic research and can explain in more detail your precise requirements and options.
Good luck!
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Don't knock Tiscali:-), I've used their unlimited contract for ages and find it excellent. My connection is on all the time so no delay in dial-up. Their support is excellent (although it is in India there has been no problems in communication). Worth a look after having NTL previously and suffered from their lack of support when needed.0

Tiscali are one of the most complained about ISP's in the country. I think the knocking & warning is fair game0 -
O2 Broadband gets lots of good reviews and it is rather cheap as well. Not much more than tiscali which I agree with others are dreadful.
You would only need the cheapest package for your usage which would be £7.50 if you are an O2 mobile customer or £12.50 if you are not.
