I second the view about not using an ISP's email address - it is a way for them to stop you switching as you don't want to lose your email address. Always go with a free service like gmail or outlook then you can keep the address but switch ISP's.

rang taltalk to say I wanted to cancel my broadband (not in contract). When they asked why I went onto a massive moan about subsidising new customers that were getting free offers and my cost had doubled in a year etc etc.
outcome was, free BB for full term of a new 18 months contract, just line to pay. I then complained about speed and was offered fibre at £7.50pm for the 18 months. I then said that I would need the new router - which they then said I could have free with no P & P and free connection.

    So I have agreed to
£7.50pm for 18 months for fibre
    free router, connection & postage
paid the line rental for a year at the 'old' price of £180

seems a reasonable haggle to me. AND, I could even understand the agent even though it must have been the middle of the night where they are
  • How much is the line rental for the remaining 6 months? That is one of the problems with 18 months contracts and why the companies like them, it puts you out of sync. As they give you line rental on a 12 month contract but internet on 18 months.

This means you either have to pay full price line rental for 6 months or you renew your line rental saver but that means you have to renew your internet as you are tied in for 6 more months of line rental when the internet deal ends.

Might not be a problem with TalkTalk as they increase their prices every few months so you have a way out. I've used them before and never again.
  • Hi there , can anyone help me . I was wondering if I could possibly get a unlimited internet supply on my mobile phone tariff and somehow connect it into my laptop when I USE IT ?
I dont often use my laptop but my bill is over £30 per month so its seems expensive for what it is ?
    Kind Regards ,
    Jonathan .
  • Hi all

Well earlier this year I asked fellow forum folk what discount they were able to get from Virgin Media for BB.

I subsequently received a private message from someone working for 'Virgin Media Partners'. They offered me a discount for the package I was on or for a new package. Now this immediately sounded dubious to me - but it subsequently appeared they are legit. I have recently tried contacting the person again to no avail.

Has anyone successfully received a decent discount from VM for BB only or BB / Phone?

Also if anyone from Virgin Media Partners is reading - please PM me.

    Thanks!

Definately a gap in the market for such a product, problem is the unlimited offers ban tethering to your laptop.

There was one company that was supposed to not be too heavy on enforcing the tether but they reduce your speed to dialup if you exceed just 3gb.

It seems to me that the mobile phone companies are the only hope for competition in the broadband market but they are not ready yet or they are plain greedy.

We were told years ago that when we opened up to the EU there would be greater competition and cheaper prices, instead the EU companies just bought UK companies and continued to charge the same or more.

Now we have mobile phone companies merging and it being allowed by the Government.

No real hope for you, I would use free services in your area or offer to share a neighbours service, just add a cable router to their router and run a bit of ethernet to your place, share the cost.

Line rental is a farce, just as is the standing charge on your energy, which is supposed to pay for new meters etc.

You can avoid line rental with Virgin but they charge you £30.25 which is more than they charge for products WITH line rental.

    Just another ripoff

MSE is not going to really complain on our behalf, they are paid by aff links so they can't really rock the boat.

OFCOM does not wish to address the landline swindle. Which shows whose side it's on.
