...And I'm ashamed to say we also ran out of brandy this evening...

Un, of all the longlasting foodstuffs we could be laying in, alcohol was supposed to be one of the longest lasting. [Albeit that did depend in part on Who Knew Where You'd Stashed it.] In between the circuits & bumps of sleep & yet more tea, please, plead with the wonderful Mrs.Un for bring back plenty? I believe you can get discounts for a caseload & it really doesn't tend to "go off".

Indeed, should Mrs.Un ever feel a tad queasy, coldy or otherwise Not Quite the Ticket, brandy has form for helping. Not, I note, solving, but helping...

And while I hesitate to mention the C festival heading our way, on another prepping thread we've been talking puddings & cakes & Stir Up Sunday - which without brandy might seem rather bland.

    All strength to you!

Funnily enough she popped out last night to get a bottle. It's probably the one thing (apart from the dandelion tea) that we decided to leave to chance as we stocked up on wine. But because of the oedema I'm off the wine, so a bit of brandy helps get to sleep

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?

Fuddle don't want to be a party pooper but please check with someone qualified if you are considering massage etc as I used to have a really great Reflexology lady visit and one of the questions they asked was about heart conditions as weirdly stuff like organs can be affected by massaging wrongly etc just to be safe XX

Un glad you got your emergency brandy :)

Yup goes without saying not to take medical (or legal or financial) advice from random peeps on the internet as gospel. And my personal view is only pay attention to UK NHS websites & PDFs - ignore all others (there are a couple of exemptions, but I can't remember at present - both medicinal libraries used by NHS staff to look up side effects, dosage, half life etc

Brandy is good for a few days - now we're running out of cat litter - little bear has decided she's ready - after nearly eight years of steadfastly refusing to use it. Maybe the feral memory of her ancestors being forced to use the factory fire bucket caused a change of heart

After a happy Scout shindig, it occurred to me How Many People, when carrying cash, carry notes. We found our gate float was only just enough & the kitchen was struggling even more. [Scout leader has been reminded that supermarkets Also have cash & can be pleaded with!]

I will be reviewing my cash stash & converting some of the bendy plastic into lump money. It occupies more space, is heavier & trickier to conceal but having the right coins led to happy croonings...

I tend not to carry much cash on me, full stop. I should definitely keep a stock with me though really, as there is always somewhere that only takes cash or the card readers have stopped working.

My change all gets shoved into one massive, empty whiskey bottle. It is slowly filling up, and occasionally gets raided when we need to top up the change in the car for parking (for example).

    I dont carry cash.
    I work in a bank.
The only time I handle cash is when I'm on tills.

    It's just not convenient anymore.

The only places that I interact with that are cash only are barbers and chip shops.
    Genuinely.

This actually caused a mini problem recently because I got a library fine and it turns out they dont accept card.
    "You've got a £[x] fine on here."
"Oh, oops. Do you take card?"
    "No."
    **awkward pause**
"I dont have any cash on me."
"That's ok. If you bring in like £[y] we'll wipe it."
    "Ok. So I'll just... go?"
"We're not going to chase you for it."

    Surreal.

Interesting. How do you manage about, for example, car parking? Where I live they all need cash, only one (of several) in the next town takes payment by credit card. What about very small purchases, such as a newspaper or small pack of sweets, where the charges for card use would eat up all the vendor’s profits? When I pop into the church to buy a copy of the parish magazine (50p) I put a coin in a box.

Cards, phone payments, cheques, and other non-cash methods have their place, but without cash many lives (mine included) would be impoverished.

Also, just on principle, I don’t want all my movements and purchases to be traceable, so cash gives me privacy.

  • In my luddite world I think maintaining cold hard cash is essential for a society to function. Apart from health you can argue that wealth is the next most important thing, so not having a means of exercising wealth independently of the technology of large multinational corporations doesn't seem like a robust economic plan. Creating a cashless society is throwing the baby out with the bathwater maybe.

Case in point. Our local farm shop. Their POS system has been broken for a week now, the POS supplier can't/won't fix it until the end of the month, so if we can't pay cash (which we can now we're forewarned) then we'd have to pay at the newsagent next door
