I could easily pay for things on a card and settle up once a month but unlike the banks, I still think cash needs to remain an important part of our trading system.

So in support of those who either don,t have the technology, or some of the elderly and charities who rely on cash donations I insist on using cash where possible.

If enough of us stubborning refuse to give up the habit society will find it hard to abolish it. Ever been in a busy supermarket when the electronic tills have failed and they will only take cash? It,s eye opening how quickly the queues at the tills empty!

Now that gives me an excuse to post a link to this wonderful story:

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-derbyshire-50347745/swadlincote-man-85-converts-mobility-scooter-into-tank

Why am I in this handcart and where are we going ?
  • At least the news isn't only covering Brexit at the moment, it's still politics and political shenannigins from all the parties spouting the same old promises and ridiculing the others but it's NOT Brexit Hoorah!

Interesting. How do you manage about, for example, car parking? Where I live they all need cash, only one (of several) in the next town takes payment by credit card.

I don't drive so I dont pay for parking, plus I've seen parking meters that accept card payment these days

What about very small purchases, such as a newspaper or small pack of sweets, where the charges for card use would eat up all the vendor’s profits? When I pop into the church to buy a copy of the parish magazine (50p) I put a coin in a box.

I dont shop at the small stores, sorry. If a place doesn't accept card, because I never carry cash, I just have to walk out. But I dont buy newspapers, I read online, and I try to crack down on small random packets of sweets. I mostly shop at Asda. The last time I went somewhere too small for card was because I needed to break a note for the bus. It was two months ago. I usually have a bus card, which I pay monthly by card, I was just going somewhere out of network

Cards, phone payments, cheques, and other non-cash methods have their place, but without cash many lives (mine included) would be impoverished.

Also, just on principle, I don’t want all my movements and purchases to be traceable, so cash gives me privacy.

If cash works for you, that's great! It doesnt work for me anymore, it's too inconvenient for the way my life is set up.

As for the companies tracing me... I kinda think the cats out of the bag on that one. They can trace me. I cant stop them. I'm not doing anything secret.

Cash was vital today as the automated systems were down in some of the shops in town.

I didn't buy a new poppy on principal this year. I still have a gorgeous pin from last year, which I have been wearing, and continuously making and buying new stuff each year seems so wasteful. So I just donated instead. I did happen to do mine with coins, but I imagine you could just do online now.

  • I got a reflective poppy on a clip last year and it lives permanently on my rucksack so gets an outing virtually every day of the year, I too haven't bought a paper one this year because I don't like the waste aspect either.
