I am hoping hard an apple tree has not died. I think last years heat was a bit more than its youth could cope with, but I wassailed it not realising.
The chaps are <shrug> 'dig it out put another one in' & I'm "it might not be Dead"....

How long do you leave a tree without leaves to try harder?

DFV - If the tips of the branches will break off its probably dead. Mine is in full leaf and has fruitlets. Most apple trees will have already flowered by now or would be about to. Sorry :(
No consolation but I've lost a small tree that I've had for at least 10 years - no idea why its died. I can only assume the late hard frost we had must have been while the sap was rising. I'm trying to make my mind up what to replace it with.
Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle
  • D for V to see if the tree is still viable cut one of the larger twigs on it low down close to the branch and if there is moisture and signs of green he's still alive but if the twig is brown and dry the tree has died. Are there leaf buds on the twigs? if there are rub one off and if it's green and sappy he's just late leafing up but if the leaf case is dry and crumbly and the bud inside is also dry and brown buy yourself another tree, this poor little one won't be doing anything.
  • I read in the FT last week that an October Brexit will be worse from a supply chain disruption standpoint than a March one would have been, as by then all the warehouses are normally full already because of Christmas things, so there won't be any extra capacity around. Definitely worth bearing in mind for prepping.

I'll hedge my bets by getting 'Christmas' in much earlier than the end of October this year (as much as I can, obviously the fresh stuff isn't doable then) which will take some thought and organisation but the presents and foodstuffs that are storable for a while will be here before Brexit happens (if it ever does). Normal preps have and will continue to be made on a weekly basis as they always have, not just for Brexit but because we live in an unpredictable world and I like to feel as secure as I can in case of local problems.

I've already got my Christmas cards and plan to get as much stuff as possible in by the end of October.

My sisters and I have a couple of days away in early November to do a bit of shopping and we exchange presents for the young children in the family then. The older children get money . So I've usually got most of the presents for my side of the family early.

Dh's family on the other hand seem to deny that Christmas exists until about the second week in December then it's a mad rush of phone calls and shopping.
  • Very interesting comment from the American (now lives here) Professor who was reviewing the papers this morning in that it frightens him that politicians these days are 'career politicians' who read politics at university, worked for an MP and have never had a job so therefore no life experience before becoming MPs themselves and that in his view they are neither representing the 'good of the country' or 'the will of the people' in their time in government and opposition. They are going their own way and not doing what is best for or desired by the people of this land. I'd felt a little isolated in having that opinion not that I talk politics anywhere but on MSE and to have someone so knowledgeable actually voice the same opinion is not precisely comforting but makes me feel less solitary.

MrsL, I've said that too for years. Things are changing and not for the best - and coming home to roost now.

I totally agree too. Ideally political parties should only have on their candidate selection lists individuals who have been teachers, office workers, those from the medical profession, factory employees or indeed anybody who had held a job where they have been faced with having to earn a living in the harsh realities of the real world.

Political researchers etc just won't cut the mustard for me. I believe we all need to mix with a wide diversity of individuals to try and understand how our fellow men and women think. By all means make up your mind about political issues once you,ve had the chance to expose yourself to a wide range of social issues, but do this from a position of knowledge of the real issues rather than political ideology.

I have met some truly genuine people who come from all kinds of different backgrounds and to say that they could not contribute to a worthwhile political career because they didn,t have a political researcher type background or study politics at university is nonsense. Having an understanding of real life at the sharp end in my view is a far better qualification.

The above qualifications are exactly what the Brexit party is looking for as candidates, the political classes need not apply

Careful or hell & damnation awaits as a twitter storm when you are trolled as a far right loon. Not my opinion of you BTW, but seems a knee jerk response by some seeking to close down debate by instantly slapping such a label on them
