I think the main good thing about quorn is what you buy is what you get. The mince stays the same weigh almost as does the pieces, where as if you bought minced meat you would loose part of it in the fat you drain off.

Oh and don't tell him, that's just silly :rotfl: Actually I did once, my partner was rattling on to his friend how he was 'the meat eater' then I told him he'd had no meat in his evening meal for 3 days :rotfl: should have seen his face.
One day I might be more organised...........

Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • I'd try saying that there was a little bit of quorn in it and see how he reacts. If his reaction is 'ugh gross' i wouldn't tell him any more :) but if it's 'no way, really, it tasted great' then I'd tell all...

Well done on the weight loss too!

It reminds me of the time that I got some kangaroo burgers, very cheap, at Tesco. I battled about whether or not to tell DH- and decided that I could only justify not telling him if I was prepared to eat them too. (At the time I ate very little meat, having been a student for years and unable to afford it.) He commented on how little fat was draining out of them and how meaty they were - then looked a bit put out when I cut half of one for my own plate, rather than giving them both to him.

I had told him I'd got a surprise for dinner but apparently he thought I must be hiding cream cakes in the fridge. Perhaps I should have waited til he'd swallowed that last mouthful before reaching for the packet out of the bin and showing him. (Suffice to say that I had to move from the bin very quickly!)

He was not happy. In fact, I'd never seen him so cross and I was seriously worried that our wedding plans were going to be off. We celebrated out tenth anniversary last year however and he's still using the anecdote as his party piece. In fact, his optician still calls him 'Skippy'!

Well I told him about the quorn and he was fine with it.

He actually said well if it gets the blasted stuff out of the freezer and saves us money and weight I'll eat it but can I have a steak one day next week:rotfl: so I have included salmon steak in this week's plan.

After all he did not clarify what sort of steak:rotfl:

    Thanks for all the replies

I hope to join in more often.

    I'm glad you told him.

Something about hiding what you're feeding a grown adult doesn't sit well with me.

I'd hate it if someone had lied to me about what they'd given me to eat. Saying that, I wouldn't mind trying Quorn or Kangaroo or whatever, but I'd want to know what it was first!

    Cheers

    This is the secret message.
  • I get my quorn from farm foods- morrisons usually have the bogof offers on, but f foods cheapest. i use worcestshire sauce, garlic and peppers to add flavour and i find it tastes better the day after especially spag bol style. I have benn at slimming world this last year and after losing 2 and a half stone, have to say it has been one of the least retrictive diets i have ever been on- im amazed at how much i can eat, although need to get back on track after xmas.

You can also chop up the sausages for stir fries etc. - they seem to be fairly dense and so you get quite a bit out of them compared to say the mince. I love Quorn, especially the chicken style pieces. I like soya mince too, but tend to use that for bolognese and chillis. It is very cheap in Sainsburys. I did buy some of the chunks but they have been sitting there for ages. Look a bit like dog food!!

I was told Iceland are much cheaper for Quorn but as I never go there, don't know if its true.

  • I didn't tell OH when I made quorn shepherds pie, I waited until afterwards and he was a bit miffed, but said we should try other quorn as he didn't really like the mince, and now he happily has quorn sausages, burgers and pieces.

In fact he is chuffed now as I let him have a bit more quorn than I would real meat (2 burgers instead of one and an extra sausage) as there are a lot fewer calories I don't mind giving him a bit extra. And everyone is happy ;)

I've been reading loads of threads on different boards and listening to the TV about the cost of living and food prices goining up and up.

I know i'm not alone when i say that me and my family eat better/healthier than we ever have and i clean (mostly) without chemicals. I grow alot of my own veg on my allotment, all organically and i feel a lot more contented with my O/S ways.

Compared to a couple of years ago, i think i spend less on food for me and my family (there are four of us) ...because of this forum. I no longer buy 'rubbish' food or expensive brands and i have weaned myself off diet coke (and i used to drink loads). I make nearly everything from scratch now and i can honestly say it tastes nicer than ready meals.

We don't eat out very often now but when we do we are always dissapointed by the quality and taste of the food.

Anyway, well done to us all!
