I dont think diesel is going anywhere, I do think they will stop making them sure. Faster than we think, i.e. within 2 years.

I dont think diesel used cars will be worthless but will be hit when replacement cars such as hybrids or ev will be easier to obtain.

IE 5 - years time.

Incentives for people to use ev or hybrid from manufacturers, large discounts for "trading" in EU4 5 and even EU6.

However: Taxi driver tonight was saying that my spending £30k odd on a desiel today is absolutely crazy, because of OTHER PEOPLE's thoughts.

He said, I would never re sell it in 2 years because by then the situation could be worse. Or more uncertain.

However, smart people might think they are bagging a bargain used car, this will increase demand, and thus stablise the prices.

I love the XJ...and the BMW 7 - I go to London I like the long comfy runs.

Now if it was a diesel I would have to think about it before deciding.

If you are buying those cars, you obviously have piles of cash. It may be a Euro 6. But what are those cars real emissions?

Euro 6 diesel cars are very clean. Diesels aren't going anywhere. They're certainly not disappearing in 2 years time.

Don't forget that the newest Euro4 car is nearly a decade old, and the newest Euro5 is around 4yo.

Diesels have their place, and will do for years to come. The problems came because buyers got hung up on low VED and high fuel economy figures, and bought diesels for the wrong use.

The best pick will be Euro 6 diesels registered just before the VED changes in April 17.

That's what I'll be buying for my next car. Then keeping for as long as possible.

Then you get the benefit of it being ULEZ exempt + considerably lower road tax.

I wouldn't buy a brand new diesel when you can get a used 1-2 year old for much cheaper purchase price AND much lower running costs.

If you want a big cruiser and are concerned about (a) costs of travelling in to London and want to avoid diesels and have £30Kish to spend then the answer would be something like

If you really want a diesel, then heres another way of looking at depreciation

Depreciation = Purchase price - selling price.

You only lose money on a car when you sell it.

If you buy it a car @ £30K and the market crashes and its worth £10K in 2 years then if you sell it you'll lose £20K = £10K a year. If you dont and drive on at it for 5 years in total and end up selling it for £3,000 then you're depreciation per year is £5,400. Much more palatable.
