I'm on my third Toyota Yaris diesel. Average around 18,000 - 20,000 miles a year, vast majority long trips. Great car for my needs.

Assuming a small car means small mileage is as daft as assuming large car means high mileage.

It's not daft, it's true, most of the time. You're an exception to the rule. Go and look at, say, 2011 Clios versus, say, 2011 Octavias and see the mileages. I bet Octavias are generally higher.
  • Diesel car sales have risen in rural areas.
Think it will be many years before any real changes happen.

Diesels should always only have been bought if the sums stacked up. Far too many people buying diesels to do 6K miles a year

    possibly, however.....

Mrs. G-J did run around in a 2ltr Vectra, pretty much all short trips (school runs, shopping, appointments, etc.), and got about 20mpg out of it @ 5k miles p.a.

Some nice man rear-ended it and it got written off 2 years back and we got (at my insistence) a mondeo td.

Same mileage/driving pattern, same size car and it has achieved 42mpg. I took it to work for 2 weeks solid and got 60mpg that fortnight on a 30-mile round trip commute.

So even low-mileage, short journey drivers can benefit from diesels, just buy older ones without DPF to worry about :)

The sums can stack up even at 6k a year.

Swapping the OHs petrol car for a diesel, and buying another diesel to replace a diesel.
I do around 9k a year, although that's probably going to go up, the OH does around the same.
Both Mondeo 2.0 tdci, we were getting 25mpg and around 38mpg with our current 2.
One has a dpf, but we'll cross that bridge when (if) we come to it.
    Sums stack up for us.

Modern diesels with DPF and emission control are fickle things. One minute you get a high normal mpg and then as the car gets older it plummets but everything still works fine and sensors are normal. Just mpg is not as good as it was. Dealer will tell you there is nothing wrong with the car. Bummed up EGR valves or clogging up filters? Who know. Oh and mpg plummets during a regen too.

Anyone buying a diesel will want to be very careful as there are loads which will fail tests from May 20th if they have a data plate including a !!!8216;emissions limit!!!8217; on the chassis plate. Especially anything pre July 2008!

The chart to be used from 20th May:

    Vehicle first used

    1. First used before July 2008
Non-turbo 2.5m-1 or plate value if lower
Turbo 3.0m-1 or plate value if lower
    2. First used on or after 1 July 2008
All diesels 1.5m-1 or plate value if lower
    3. First used on or after 1 January 2014
All diesels 0.7m-1 or plate value if lower

There are many vehicles used before July 2008 with data plates specifying under 1.0 and won’t go below double that figure!

I remember my old Citroen BX TGD Turbo, made in 1989, bought in 94, scrapped 2006 at 233k (well clocked by previous owner) miles, all test results except one of 1.35 in range 0.6 to 0.85
