  • Yes, my card declines. I haven't been able to use it to pay for things online, and I cant get cash out of the wall. My current account has been completely deleted, it doesn't appear in the list of accounts. There is money on there, but my card just declines.
They want me to go into branch but I can't get there without petrol. Not sure what help that would do, I know of others who went to the branch just to be told they need to ring customer services.

At first, they tried to charge me a £30 fee, for doing it in branch instead of online.
Seems unlikely to be a coincidence that that's their fee for (guaranteed same-day) CHAPS transactions, rather than there being any in-branch charge as such (standard faster payments shouldn't incur any charges whether online, by phone or in branch, although limits may vary by channel), so perhaps there was a misunderstanding of some sort?

An emergency credit card for when this happens - or you lose/damage your debit card?

I'm not saying this is the case for the previous poster, but not everyone can have a credit card. It's only a few years ago that I didn't have one due to credit problems.

I appreciate what you are saying, but not all of us have credit. Further, I shouldn't have to be using a credit card at my expense. My money is being withheld from me, even now after they've supposedly "fixed" this issue.

It was clear, the cashier said, a faster payment of £16k will incur a £30 charge, and even considering the issues with online banking, they couldn't waive it (until my discussion with the manager).

Keep note of the problems you've encountered.

Once this is all resolved, send them a complaint. As Mchambers would say - get some wonga from them.

In the meantime, I can only suggest you get a little bit of money from a family member or good friend/neighbour.

Another reason for not having all of your (financial) eggs in one basket though. Even just a little in another account could tide you over when something like this happens.

Very true, S. But as we age we'd rather like to run fewer accounts. What's a reasonable minimum? Two current accounts, one O/L saver, one passbook BS account, one phone/post account, and two different credit cards?
Free the dunston one next time too.

In a moment of what can only be described as 'clever thinking' I moved most of my money out of the account on Friday. Glad I did now. Not had much of a need to access online banking but when I have its worked about 20% of the time. The one payment I made in (last night) went through ok and so did the subsequent payment.

Mr S has been able to access our accounts. Looks like part of the problem may be that everyone is trying to get on the system at the same time - and the system is crashing because it can't cope with everyone trying to get on the system at the same time.
Just used the phone app, took a while, said oops, somethings wrong, but could see my account, a few more oops, still shaky. As you say could well be to do with more people trying to use it than normal.

I managed to see my accounts using the app. I thought I was going to be able to transfer money but when I used my thumb print I got an error message saying the information I'd entered was incorrect. It's my thumb print, I can't change it!
