3 mobile broadband

  • Hi.

I'm just trying this out for the first time & results are not encouraging.

Speed for me at home is really poor....maybe averaging 20kbps or less....I got a tiny improvement by moving the modem around but it still ain't what I'd call broadband.
It's taken me almost 20 mins just to register here, validate from the email & return to post this reply.

OK...it just got worse. Conection dropped & reconnecting was very slow....up to 30 mins now for a 2 minute task.

I think I'll be cancelling my subscription tomorrow...don't want to be tied in to this for 24 months!!

Note I'm in North London which is theoretically a "turbo zone".

I have the T-mobile version of this (£20/month for 3GB, 24 month contract, free modem). Works no problem, a very simple self-install of the software when the modem was plugged in. It works consistently and does not drop connection. I get 1.8M speed at my parents and parents-in-laws, but only a steady and stable 56K at home (as the t-mobile website suggested I would).

I was able to use it successfully on the train going in and out of high speed areas.

Worth checking the coverage maps. I believe the 3 network will substantially increase it's turbo area by April 2008.

    Which area are you in?

Sorry, Fayraz, I meant to mention it in my last post. South Manchester at the moment, but I've tried using it all over the show from north of Glasgow to South Wales and from Newcastle down to the east midlands.

Thats not very good if I was you I would be sending that back straight away and cancelling the contract.

I found if I move my modem near the window I get a faster connection speed.

I have not tried it in as many places as you but the two areas I have tried; North-East (Middlesbrough) and Yorkshire (Shipley and Keighley) its been brilliant. Maybe I have just been lucky and both are very strong "Turbo" areas but I have heard that they are spreading the "Turbo" areas further in December.

But if you are not happy is it possible you can send it back or is it too late?

I'm sure there must be more to it than that. We have two people in this topic who are having good service from the device and two who are not. It might be dodgy modems (although mine at least claims to be working normally) or some incompatability problem with particular operating systems, perhaps.

According to 3's small print I've had it too long to just send it back, but there must be some sort of comeback when I'm committed to paying £25 per month for something I'm not getting. I'll have a think about my next move.
  • After much fidling about with the location of the modem & using the dual cable (because of it's extra length) to get it nearer the window I've got it up to a speetest.net result of 349 down & 72k up.
It's not great for a 2.8mb connection but a lot better than the 20k I got by just plugging into the pc (which admittedly was on the floor in a corner)...I'm going to try a usb extension cable tomorrow & stick it on the window & if it improves any more.

Will post back in case anyone is interested.

    Cheers

If you are using Windows XP it should automatically install I am not too sure about Vista because I don't use it.

Try uninstalling it and reinstalling the software to see what happens, also to get the speeds I advertised I use the short USB cable supplied; connected to a USB extension lead and I place the modem next to a window or wherever I get the strongest signal.

I am now in a different room and just done a quick speed test and I am hitting speeds of 886 kb/s.

That would be your best bet getting the modem out of the corner and into clear space and I think it would improve your speed considerably. The first time I used the modem I connected it directly to my laptop with the short USB cable and all I was getting was 3G speeds but since extending it I am hitting reasonable speeds.

I am not sure if it was interference?
