Just the thread I need. Managed to fight to stay on at work because I am still saddled with ex husband's debts years after the divorce. (He ran up debts before he b
off leaving them all in my name). Mortgage expires when I'm 72 (am currently 65) so that has to be paid off. House (purchased from local solicitor) was a wreck when I bought it so needs extensive repairs (it had been doctored to look good and I didn't have the money for a proper survey). Currently have (hopefully had-results due Thursday) cancer so a bit fed up.

But given the circumstances it could be a whole lot worse. People get into debt for many reasons-and some of these may not be of their own making.
It's easy to judge and easy to minimise the erosive effect of debt on wellbeing. The things that come circling after debtors or exploiting those who need money are society's shame. I don't blame them for coming after their money but there should be limits on their ability to intimidate and mislead

Welcome Eira, blimey you've had a rough run of luck. Sending out some positive thoughts your way.

Yes, people can judge about debt, but one positive aspect of being in debt is that sometimes it makes you realise who your real friends are (ie those people who are emotionally supportive), and I think it has also made me far less judgemental myself. As you say, you never know what has happened in someone's life.

As regards the moneysaving, welcome on board! I don't know how much you've been on other bits of the site, but I can personally recommend several of the challenges boards - "Payment A Day" is good, and I'm just starting to get into the 'Make £10 per day during December' board (they do a new one every month, with lots of ideas for upping your income).

Hi everyone. It's been a good few months since my last 'confession'

Well the debt clearing was going great. My bank gave me a CC so I could balance transfer my large debt. Excellent. Then one day I was in M&S and tried my luck with a CC application, fully expecting to be rejected. I wasn't! It enabled to me reduce my list of 'needs' and indulge in a few 'wants' at reduced prices AND I actively thought about those 'wants' too over a few days, which wouldn't have occurred to me in the bad old days of spend now think never :).

I would have made better progress on the debt reduction front, but about 2 years ago myself and a group of friends decided to visit New York next April, so I've been saving for that. No derailment there, which made me realise how much I've changed with regards to money management. Don't get me wrong, I still have times when I actively think about buying 'wants' rather than 'needs', but I've managed to curtail those impulses (for the most part)..

Earlier this evening, I'd read about the 0% for 24 months Barclaycard in the weekly news and, on a whim, decided to apply, fully convinced I'd be wasting my time. I was approved! I'm so shocked I can't believe it!

I've not worked out the figures yet but I'm hoping this will enable me to clear my debts within 18 months to 2 years. I'd hoped to clear it before I hit 50 (a year's time), but soon realised that wasn't achievable so was working on clearing it as early as possible into my 50s.

Hugs and encouragement to everyone working on their debt clearance plans. We WILL get there in spite of any obstacles in our way, cos that's our objective :T:j

Now I've unloaded, I'm off to do a bit of cleaning before the year's end.

    2012 - a great year for us LH'ers :T

  • Happy New Year everyone. I hope we are all in debt busting mode for 2012. I am so motivated for this year and I hope it continues.I have also joined the pay off as much as you can in 2012 challenge and will continue with the 100 day challenge. Both have a different focus for me. The 100 day challenge is anything extra I pay over and above my minimums and the pay off is all payments. I've pledged £10k to that and i am determined to do it by hook or by crook. So here's to us and hopefully by the end of this year all our plans will come to fruition
5 Year plan. April 2020 to June 2025- CC and mortgage free by time I'm 60
    Currently CC £23,674.36 /£14,895.41/£14315.42
    Mortgage £28,214.65/ £26,254.71/ £25,746.43
    By end 2020 I want CC at £ 19,000.00.
By end 2021 I want CC at £10,000.00

happy new year debtbusters! Decided that I am going to update my book (pen and paper me; not that good at spreadsheets!) so that I can keep track and feel encouraged. Ive also joined the pay as much as you can in 2012 to help and having had a dire couple of years debtbusting (due to various life events, lack of motiovation etc) want to really pay some off this year and move forward.
I have been v motivated by the fact that I need to get 10,000 to have bariatric surgery and feel that every day I dont have it is in many ways a day wasted...so onwards and upwards my friends! Heres to 2012!

Happy new year everyone, wishing you lots of successful debtbusting!

Feeling a bit low as one of my debts is due to be passed to a DCA for the first time. I know its normal but it still feels likea low point. Still, I shall pass the correspondence to Payplan and trust that they'll advise me of anything I need to do.
ISOM - I hope you reach your target surgery so you can move on.
    MIT - loving the positivity!
Eira- You've been having a rough time haven't you? I hope 2012 brings you good health and happiness.

Good luck everyone forthe coming year and beyond.
