One tip SH - or actually 2 - first is don't assume that multi car would be cheaper - it isn't for us. Second don't be tempted to go for Admiral - they are often decent value for the policy but they are absolute devils when it comes to having any sort of a claim (even one where a piece of paper from the police confirms no fault on the part of their insured) and have some lovely little tricks like making a £50 increase to your policy premium mid-year when you inform them that a claim has officially gone "no fault" as they reckon that might make you more careless in the future... that of course was after they had already loaded the premium as a result of the claim in the first place...
Mr EH's last two cars have both been in the "cheap and cheerful" bracket - we paid a bit more than you're looking at but then we knew it would be doing high and regular mileage. Both have lasted a good many years and only been "got shot of" when the advisory list on the MoT becomes higher than we're willing to pay for that age of car...

That will be good that OH will be able to share the load once you get a car, sounds like a bargain too.
I agree about Admiral, I used them one year and won't do so again.... this time, we got 2 separate policies with direct line which was cheaper than any multicar policies I could findDFD March 2025 (£35000 paid off)

Definitely just shop around for single insurance policies.
Hope your DD feels better soon.
I'm thrilled you have knocked another debt out, the sense of relief it brings with it makes all the belt tightening worth it.
Fingers crossed the car is viable, even a year it of it will help the family. Have you checked it on the DVLA website as it lists MOTs going back several years.
Now, on to you. You have to take time for yourself, you are not supermom or superwife, you are savingholmes, don't forget to find sometime for yourself, even if it's a soak in the tub, with some music and a glass of wine. Well done paying off the car. It is a lovely feeling paying what is owed, it's a weight off. I've got an old car which cost me £150 but its fab.Weight loss 6lb/16lb 10lb to goI spend an insane amount of time wondering if I am doing it right, sometimes I remind myself that I am doing my best....and that is enough0

hope dd is ok and that the car lives up to your expectations. you are doing great with clearing another debt. well done you. What I do not give, you must never take by force.

Thank you all for posting. Appreciate the support. Decided not to go for that particular car - we now have another in mind for a similar price but higher mileage. We went down to one car and a motorbike last summer (2018) and gave up a 65 plate estate... DH still misses it - although I kept my very nice car. This second car is intended to help with DD, help DH get through winter ice and snow more safely and perhaps an occasional use by DS (when home from uni) if the costs aren't too prohibitive. DH still intends to use his motorbike most of the time. Will look into the single car policy versus dual options. Thanks for those tips.
It's been another really tough week. DD fell again last night after letting the bath overflow and flooding our kitchen... She's completely over-tired and forgetful so kept her off school today. She has an appointment next week - where hopefully we will be referred for more help. In the 18 days she's been back at school - she's had 5 off... So far they have been supportive unlike her last school just hope it stays that way. My work have been brilliant too despite me having to work my hours this week around DD. Just taking DD to A&E meant that it was afternoon before I got to work one day - at a time when in an ideal world I would be working lots of extra hours to fit everything in. Really appreciate the comments about not trying to be super mum or super woman - there's so much pressure in our culture to be exactly that isn't there...
I wish I could say I had a relaxing weekend planned but I'm due to take DS back to uni on Sunday... In theory DH could come with me and share the driving - but I'm not sure there wil be room. DS hasn't started washing his stuff never mind packing or unearthing stuff from wherever we stored it after he went to Oz a year ago.... I think I need to go into hiding. He also has no money to live on until his student loan comes through as he has already spent anything we've given him. This too is putting pressure on us... He doesn't appear to have been paid for the work he did a few weeks ago so that is not helping either - and he's had a £35 bill from Oz to pay... Need to try and work out how to carve out time for me tomorrow... alone somewhere... just to get some peaceAchieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

I am so excited this morning. We've been waiting for a particular consultant's appointment for about 18 months after DD's case wrongly being closed down and then a different specialist saying they were sorting the referral 6 months ago but hadn't actually. We thought we were back at square 1 and it would take 8-12 more months. We went to or GP a week ago and explained how distressed we were. We have jumped the normal queue somehow and are being seen in 2 months time - and then should get the report by Christmas. So thrilled... We'd even considered paying privately but it is £3.5K and schools aren't required to accept non NHS results... I'm so relieved I could cry... the medical profession are finally listening... Well done for paying off the car and I hope the new one turns out to be a little gem.
Hope your dd has a better week, family comes first so glad school is supportive.
I hope your drive tomorrow is ok and your getting some space today.

Thanks Hugglemonster et al.
Well we bought our new car - 06 plate, 51K on the clock £775, plus insurance and tax all using EF. It's a wrench - but I know that we can refill our EF when I get paid mid October. I also feel better that we made the right decision and the car we bought has good headroom and a good boot so glad about that too. It had just had a brand new starter motor for £280 and drove really nicely - no obvious signs of anything wrong.
DS is now packing for going back to uni tomorrow. He has emptied half my tin cupboard but I still have quite a chunk left. He has taken most of my herbs - only bought for him anyway. Also some of my spices. I have some bits of food in the freezer he can also take. He needs to get to 11 October when his student loan gets paid...Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Congrats on the new car, sounds positive having low miles for the age
Wonderful news about DD, hopefully things will move in the right direction after her appointment.
You know your son won't be having an empty belly while waiting for his loan, that will be one less stress for you.
