It's so good your son understood what you were saying, it must be so hard to get the balance right between helping them, but only as much as you can afford.
I think it does young people good to get jobs to help support themselves, it teaches them the value of money and I would hope employers appreciate graduates who already have some work experience too.DFD March 2025 (£35000 paid off)

Thanks Ohs...
DH ended up taking DD to school and I left early to pick her up - also took her to the doctor trying to get her more help. Also wrote a letter to the school this morning and an email tonight. They must love us! Work was as manic as expected. Any hopes of an early dart tomorrow have been rapidly evaporating... :doh:yet may need to collect DD if she doesn't go in by pedal power. She's completely wiped and we're getting a blood test done to see if it is just the stress of school or something more organic._pale_
DH and I are still due to go away for the weekend... desperately hoping I don't bring work home with me tomorrow night but immovable external deadline looming so may not be able to avoid... Still need to find a pretty card (or make one) for Saturday's wedding. Just done a food order - spent too much so likely to spend the rest of the month pulling it back:wall:Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Sounds a positive conversation that you had with your DS. University is an interesting time, from a parental perspective! I think my DD1 has watched me struggle to pay everything myself that she has become quite Saving orientated. She does get the full loan support but has been able to save some of it and has worked in a job during the holidays and has one waiting for her to return to next week. That said she does have hefty material costs for her course but thankfully has been able to manage her money so far. She now admonishes me if I haven't found the cheapest version of something!paydbx2025 #26 £890/£5000 . Mortgage start £148k June 23 - now £138k.

Thanks Honeysuckle and Jwil. We had a fab weekend. Yesterday's was one of the best wedding's we've ever been to. I was dreading going as can find socialising hard - but we knew about 17 of the people there really well - I hadn't known beforehand exactly who was invited. We had a fab time and only spent £7 on drinks all day. Today we went to an NT property, had coffee too (£5.50) and then went for a sunday roast and soft drinks at a pub (26.50) before getting home late afternoon. Was a really positive experience.
Kids had actually cleaned the kitchen - inspired by DS so that was a nice surprise. Pooch had really missed us too so gave us a very energetic welcome.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

:money:I bought myself a knew outfit for the wedding - and thought to ask about a possible discount and got 15% off as I'm signed up to their newsletter but hadn't had the email - saving me around £10.:money: It was a brightly patterned dress with a filmy cardigan - half filmy half soft t-shirt type material so good for work tooAchieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Thanks CMD. It was a really good weekend - did lots of walking too. Shattered now though - trying to force myself to finish getting ready for work.
Mortgage has just gone out with OP of £78.51. CC4 been paid too at £172. DH still needs to pay uni accommodation £934 - and provide ID... Then bank account will look a lot sadder until he gets paid towards the end of this week. Just had car insurance quote through so need to compare to try and get a better deal. May add breakdown cover too. Had a small payment from CB - hoping that they got my paperwork and pay the rest of the money soon.
Still need to ring an old life insurance cover company and check cover and potentially cancel.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

Tried three times to post this...
We spent about £4.4K on a new garage door and a combi boiler last year which we are still paying for - the good news is that in its first year (and after switching to a new provider) we went from gas and elec being £2.8K to £1.5K - so a saving of £1.3K a year - so hoping it will repay in around 3.5 years which is so encouraging....
Also managed to kick some stuff forward with the doctor for our DD today - trying still to get her the help she needs. Talked to parents with similar experiences at the weekend which was also helpful.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

It's so heartening to hear of making back money like that. Makes the ouch cash expenditure worthwhile!
Sorry to hear about DD. Does she have an underlying health condition or is that what you are investigating? No need to answer on here if you'd prefer to keep private.Total (Aug 19):€58,567 Now:€26,947
