Thanks Sandy - I got DS a mattress from Ikea and it has been okay but I wanted the one I wanted. I got through in the end so really happy. Effectively 0% interest deal for 6 months... Nice and symbolic having a new mattress after the divorce too.
Before anyone starts worrying that I am going down the slippery slope - I have enough cashflow over the months to pay for it, my solicitor's bills, Ex equity and known motor bills - I just want to keep some cash to hand in case of anything unforeseen while I bed into the new mortgage. I am also kind of 'cycling' the £ so that I will be able to pay off the 1329 due for repayment in March without a balance txfr fee - while still preserving an EF. Doing it that way saves me £40-50 in txfr fees. Just paid £150 deposit so far. If my voucher from work comes through in time - I may be able to use it towards the balance... I need to try and work out what my login details are for the card I want to repay...
I have a sleigh bed frame so thinking of trying to chalk paint over it or would consider trying to upholster it as the frame itself is solid - but the 'leather' is flaking off... To get anything similar was in the £1500+ range... I like the grey velvet type ones so may investigate that at some point - unless any of you already know how to upholster it? It would feel like sacrilege but worst case I could use a staple gun. I have one somewhere. I would prefer to use fire retardant fabric though and I don't know how easy that is to find. My neice made herself a beautiful headboard - so could ask her for advice. Think she used board, foam, material and a staple gun. Mine is more complicated as the frame is multi-sided so any staples if used would need to be underneath where they wouldn't be seen.
I also bought myself some new PJs and some fluffy style slipper socks. I'm hoping the latter will keep my feet warm and help me delay putting the heating on during the day. It worked last year. It was about 4 degrees here earlier - but only put my heating on at teatime.
I'm going to check in with the property lawyer tomorrow and just check I'm okay to sign the final forms and then get them witnessed and in the post. I'll add DD's this weekend before I send them off and then there should be no delays.
It doesn't seem to have dawned on Ex that he should be making arrangements to clear all his stuff pronto... I am wondering how close to (or worse beyond) the wire he will get before sorting it out.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

When I split up with a previous partner years ago I got a whole new bed. The old one was completely second hand (from my Aunt) and had a pink material covered headboard. The guy dyed his hair dark brown and there was a brown patch on it. I was almost as glad to be rid of the bed as I was to be rid of him. Having a new bed that only I had been in felt brilliant.
I know you'll love having a new mattress, it feels really good.Mortgage at 12/07/2022 = £175,000

The great thing about being on your own - picking out what you want - a lovely feeling. Good luck with the bed recovering - there are lots of articles on the 'net and try youtube as well, but here's one - they recommend some lining fabric first, then some fabric and a staple gun. Looks fairly straightforward - like wrapping a big present to yourself

Sounds like things are coming together for you and a new mattress for a new start is quite symbolic. Do you know what the exes plan is to move him and his stuff out on 19th?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Thanks GAP, Sandy and ES.
I'll check the link out.
@enthusiasticsaver it's because he doesn't have a plan that I am concerned. I don't want to use up my holiday or weekends sorting his stuff but am starting to think if I don't it won't leave the house. I think he is still in major denial.
He says he's doing an 18 mile bike ride this weekend, also seeing my sis and sorting his mum's garage to make more of his stuff fit. He says he's taking some stuff to work.
Very little of his stuff has left yet and it worries me. I asked him if he'd booked some time off to get it sorted and he said no.
I am considering asking BIL to help chivy him along as otherwise I can see there being an issue.Achieve FIRE/Mortgage Neutrality in 2030

I don't think you should be sorting his stuff out as long as you keep reminding him it needs to be gone by 19th. How strict you are on that is up to you and depends I guess on how pro active he is about sorting any of it out. You could charge him storage costs if it is not gone on time.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. SH, not sure if I missed it, but does he have somewhere to live yet? I suppose the issue of his stuff really depends on how 'hard' you are feeling. On the day the house becomes yours, you could start dropping hints that you will be changing locks and removing his stuff from your home. He will find them on the drive if he doesn't move them before then. That way, on the day, you don't have to be gentle with them, just hoist them out of the window! (Always wanted to do that!)What I do not give, you must never take by force.

I doubt any of us are worried you're on a slippery slope, you're explaining plans and have put thought behind it. Also, as it's just you, it will get cleared and not carried forward.
There should be ways of doing your bed, even tacking it on to the existing material. Look up car headliner pins or twist pins for a cheap fix to secure both old and new together.
As for ex, it sounds like there's a huge bag of denial and it will be last minute, if at all. Get BIL involved sooner than later.Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.6 -
Suggestion on the situation with Ex’s stuff - speak with your solicitor and ask that they speak with his - and that it is done on the basis of asking his solicitor to just give him a “standard reminder” that he and his stuff need to vacate the house on the agreed date. Your solicitor can even say to the other side that you’d just said a few things that gave them concerned that he might not realise this, so it won’t look like you nagging him again. It’s not in the least hard or unfair to expect him to meet the terms of an agreement that HE has agreed to, either. If the house was being sold completely he would have to vacate at the right point - and in real terms it IS being sold, to you!As for the spending on the mattress - it’s needed, you have thought it through, and made a plan to buy it in the most economic way possible while also getting section 75 protection. Never mind a slippery slope, that sounds remarkably MSE to me! He's going back to his mum's initially.
Thanks ES, MF and EH
I told him over a month ago that my solicitor says vacant possession and he has no right to store things here. I said she'd said if he was going to it needed to be written into fin consent order and he agreed he'd sort it.
Gotta go DD just returned. In car.... Was waiting for her
