  • DD has just come downstairs for a chat, she has been watching money saving videos and listening to TED talks about spending less money, she is very careful with her money anyway but is now focusing on saving for a house deposit, since splitting with her DBF she has come to the conclusion that she will be buying a house on her own and not as part of a couple,so she is going to save as if this is the likeliest scenario and then if she does meet someone that will just be a bonus and she will be financially secure in her own right
So tonight she has listened to a talk by a lady who having been sickened by how much she spent one Christmas decided the spending had to stop,so she vowed not to spend any money for a year, she allowed money for the essentials so all her essential bills and food but that was it,she didn't even allow money for transport and rode her bike instead, at the end of the year she had saved £20,000 :eek::eek:

People are taking up the challenge and doing the same thing so DD is now going to do it starting in January, she is allowing money for essential bills, food and her train fair, she has to catch the train to uni and it's in another city so this is essential, she does some vlogging on YouTube already so she is going to do a YouTube vlog about her experience
She has told me tonight it will mean no birthday presents for anyone but that because she won't be buying me any presents I'm not allowed to buy her any either, so I will be saving some money as well then:j

I have to really admire her and I really hope she can do this, she was so enthused about it it's tempting me to try it too,I'm just not sure I would be able to keep it up,the thought of not buying my mum and dad a birthday present or my mum a Mother's Day present makes me feel sad
They wouldn't care but I would,I don't care that DD won't be buying me any presents this year so why do I feel so bad about my mum and dad,it's funny how our brains work isn't it

  • That's impressive from your daughter. I sometimes wish I had that kind of motivation in order to over pay the mortgage etc and clear my debts faster. I wishI had started this journey so much sooner than now, but I guess we can't change the past so need to focus on now. She sounds like she really has her head screwed on.

    Glad you did the desk!!

Great bargains on the books too. Every little bit really does help put towards someone else. x
    September 2017 Debt = £25330

    Starting afresh.

You can do anything if you put your mind to it. x
  • I wish I'd had your daughter's motivation thirty years ago! Good luck to her. (Keep buying your mum and dad presents OBL).

What a clear sighted DD you have. Kudos to her and I think you should try it with her.
Tell everyone that you buy presents for that you're doing it to support/encourage DD. You can always spend time with Mam and Dad, which to be honest is probably much more appreciated than a present. :A
    I Believe.....
That it isn't always enough, to be forgiven by others.
Sometimes, you have to learn to forgive yourself.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery
Today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

happiness isn't achieved by getting extra things,
but by getting rid of the things that make you unhappy

She definitely does have her head screwed on,I wish I had her determination, I'm another one who wishes I had started my journey earlier and I got quite worked up about it,but I've decided now that what's done is done,it can't be changed and at least I am sorting it out now

I was really pleased with the books and it means I have now finished my mum and dads presents,I can't believe I'm nearly finished with all my Xmas shopping :A

Me too Hairy, life would certainly be very different now if I had,I might join in the challenge but add my mum and dads presents into my essential money pot,you are allowed to arrange it as you please so I will think about how practical it would be for me to do it too

I am very tempted and I have until January the 1st to decide if I want to try it,I was thinking the same thing about mum and dad, they would much rather spend time together than get a present
I would also not be able to buy my DGS anything either or DD1 and that might cause a few problems:rotfl:
