My journey to a debt free life

  • My heart goes out to all those still on the front line with ever-decreasing resources. I work in social care and it's much the same here: the sector is understaffed by tens of thousands. I heard that people prefer to work in hospitality which I can understand.

DS2 is a nurse and constantly on the go: when he started a couple of years ago he was with a contingent of other new nurses, all local. This year's new contingent is all from abroad - and to be fair the care sector would have foundered long ago without the amazing staff from other countries. However England no longer funds nursing degrees which is short-sighted in the extreme.

'A big mess' describes it perfectly. :(
The NHS would have ground to a halt years ago without all our staff from abroad, we took on lots of nurses from the Philippines a coupe of years ago and thankfully they have stayed. The removal of funds for nursing degrees is ridiculous

The nursing definitely needs to go back to being funded….I saw how hard the nursing staff worked when I was in hospital and that was a year ago….and it definitely doesn’t appear to be any better for them. I can’t believe it’s a year ago today I was in ICU…..how time flies.
You are doing amazingly well with the house. Hope you manage to resist temptation at work…..don’t dare give up with SW…..you’re keeping me going 👍👍
It's ridiculous they way they are treated nowadays, no wonder they are all leaving even at my band I could actually earn more working for Lidles
The house is looking really good and is much easier to keep clean and tidy 😊
I won't give up SW because I really need to lose weight, I'm just having a wobbly moment that's not helped by the temptations at work. I did actually get my coffee break today so went to the staff room to be confronted by a white chocolate sponge cake, 12 iced muffins ,a bag of celebrations ,a bag of heroes, a tub of heroes and a box of fancy chocolate biscuits. I ate one Hero and didn't touch anything else

  • Well done on all the DIY and work you have had done. You must be so pleased with it all.

Sorry to hear how awful work is at the moment though. As you write though, staff shortages seem prevalent across the board in all areas though. My sister is a manager at a motel which is more of a wedding/events venue now. She has lost a lot of staff since lockdown and can't replace them. They have business streaming in if they want it now, but are having to turn this away to concentrate on the weddings that are going ahead which had been cancelled from last year.  The cleaning company that they used have told her they can't renew the contract as they can't even get staff!  She and the other staff they have are doing up to 15 hour days including the cleaning as well as waiting. She said she is praying that their chef and sous chef don't get poached as everything will just fall to pieces......😞
Sadly I think nearly everyone is in the same boat,I feel sorry for the smaller businesses who are struggling to find staff. My hospital was relocating lots of wards the other day and they put out a request for any free staff to come and do a night shift for double pay just to move equipment from one ward to another to make room for more covid patients 🙀

Ah, that's a worrying situation. :( DS2 (the one who's a nurse) said he got paid a ridiculous amount for covering an understaffed ward on Bank Holiday, but the Covid situation in their hospital is currently not too bad.

We went out for a meal this evening and a remarkable number of places could only take bookings as they didn't have enough staff to run their normal service.

  • Today was a quiet day at work which is very unusual on a Wednesday, clinics are normally manic so it was a welcome lull. I was in quite a lot of pain in my hip today so called my GP to make an appointment and I have got a phone appointment on the 13th of September, that was the earliest they could fit me in 🙀

I also forgot to post about a work away day that we are having in October. Our ward is all split into groups and we are assigned a band 6 staff nurse as support. They decided each group could have an away day but it had to be some sort of team activity and a group trip to the pub didn't count, anyway out group were going to do an escape room but non of them open on a Monday so now we are doing Segway olympics at a local wildlife park, god knows what that involves but it should be hilarious, I've never been on a Segway and I'm not sure any of the others have either, the group I'm in are a real fun group of girls so we should have a good day

Im now off tomorrow so will be spending the day at home painting and pottering. It was very autumnal here today and I have that new start at school feeling where everything is fresh and new. I had the urge to do some crafting today for the first time in months so hopefully will get back into my crafts now and we have a new branch of a well known craft store open here today so that's quite exciting , I won't get to go there for a while but will definitely be paying a visit at some point

  • I bet you’ll have a ball on the day even if you can’t do it, just laughing!

You’ve done loads in the house, sounds like it is coming on greatly. X

  • Just having my lunch break then I'm off into the loft to do an unplanned for job. I have my deckchairs in the hall and I think it might be time now to put them away 😫😫the weather today is cold grey and windy and I don't think we are going to get warm enough weather now to warrant  sitting in the garden. The flooring guys also left me a half full pack of laminate and some spare carpet so I'm putting that up there as well, I wanted to keep the carpet in case any of it gets damaged on the stairs because I could use it to replace a damaged tread or two,I'm also thinking if I buy another pack of laminate at some point I could have it in the spare room which is only a box room so wouldn't need much. I reckon I could do that myself with the help of YouTube 😀

Another job I have for today is to clean out the 🐓🐓run and top up their supplies. I'm worming them today which involves mixing a powder into 2kgs of their food then keeping them locked in the run for 7 days until they have eaten it all. They are not allowed any other food during this time so can't come out in the garden or have any treats, they are going to hate it but it needs doing. One of them has some weird symptoms that could be caused by a parasite so I'm hoping this will get rid of whatever is wrong with her, the vets gave me antibiotics but they haven't made any difference

Right I had better crack on 😊

Don’t be too hasty putting your deckchairs away, apparently it’s going to warm up next week. Having said that, still waiting for that predicted heatwave that never materialised 😐
