  • This is a gransnet piece that says grandparents can provide childcare from 4th July https://www.gransnet.com/grandparenting/grandparents-and-grandchildren-during-coronavirus

It follows a question in parliament from Miriam Cates who asked if the new rules mean family and friends can start giving childcare again, and Boris answered 'yes it does'.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

It's a bit of a mess really. Boris and co. did say that if you visit another household you had to observe social distancing, yet later he specifically said that friends and family could start to resume childcare again. I'll see if I can dig out a reference to that.

So I'm not sure where that leaves you...
I definitely didn't hear him say friends and relatives could resume childcare, I only heard him say that two households could visit each other inside or out then the chief medical officer said the social distance rules still applied

I don't think I've misunderstood that, but it's possible as there are rather a lot of grey areas which aren't always explained with the level of clarity we all need.

That's what I heard and understood, I'm sure I've got it right

My understanding is that hugs and contact is fine if you have formed a 'social bubble' with one household and a single person. Meeting another household inside still means social distancing.

We can now go around my friends house for a vodka night (do it every three months or so!) But need to socially distance while there as much as possible. Good job we are not huggers in general tbh. If you choose to look after your grandchildren I don't see an issue, and I do think some grandparents who are not working and are perhaps a bit younger than 70 with no other health issues are choosing to do so.

However you are not a single household, and work in a high risk environment, so meeting up with another household you would still need to observe social distancing.
This is what I understood, if I was single I could have formed a bubble with another household like you say
Its hard to know what to do, I'm worried because of where I work and also if I catch something from my grandchildren I then have to take time off, if I passed anything on to them I would be devastated and I really don't want to catch the virus myself if at all possible because my chest gets really badly effected whenever I get a simple cold, I don't think the outcome would be good, the thought of catching it terrifies me 😟

Why did he not say this in the press conference then, it was made clear in the press conference that you could have another household visit your house if you could socially distance, I took that to mean any grandchildren visiting would have to keep their distance too,I read the gransnet article and it sounded like they had just taken their info from the press conference

I think I'm going to leave it for now and see how things go and maybe review in a couple of  months when I can see how easing the lockdown effects things in July

I'm not accomplishing much today, it's too hot to do anything but lounge around so that's what Im currently doing 😀 I have taken B out and got a load of washing pegged out though.
Me and DD 2 were supposed to go into town today for some shopping but she is still in bed, she was up until the early hours finishing her last essay,I didn't need anything urgently so could go on Saturday instead when it might be cooler

I do have some jobs to do but I'm having trouble motivating myself to do them 😀

I read it the same way as you too OBL so haven't asked my mum to resume picking up DD.
I'm hoping it is cooler too soon. I am not really a huge fan of the heat anyway, and this is quite unbearable now for me. DD is having trouble sleeping too and is getting really upset by it all. x

Thanks Nicnak,I'm just going to wait a while and see how things pan out now people are allowed to do pretty much anything they like, Today was too much for me,I used to love the heat but not anymore.Poor B is really suffering, I left the spare room and bathroom windows open last night and both the doors ,they are at opposite ends of the landing so I thought it might create a breeze, it was lovely and cool when I first got up this morning,I will do that again tonight

I agree OBL. Lots of students have been talking about what their friends have been doing and it isn't good. Some of them have parents that work in a care home. It just baffles me the selfishness of some people and I don't understand why some people find it so acceptable.
I hope it is cooler today for your work especially wearing those masks. We were told we needed to wear one in the food technology room but I refused to go in there. It is far too hot anyway, and I am not good with face coverings. x
