OK, but why in that case would there be a 1,000 pound limit, or are you saying that all Prolific income needs to be declared via self-assessment?silvercar said:
Somehow you are going to need to declare the income in order to pay the tax. The only way I can think that you can do that is through self assessment.Zuzi said:Is it true that with Prolific earnings >1,000 pounds a self-assessment becomes necessary? I thought the earnings just get added to what let's say I earn in my day job, and it increases the taxable income (and hence can have an impact on tax rate etc). Why would that alone be a reason to complete the self-assessment?
In my day job I earn and pay tax via PAYE, I have no properties etc and receive savings interest <10K annually. I just did a quick check on the HMRC site whether I need to submit a SA, I am not a sole trader so answered No to that, I then truthfully answered all the remaining questions and the answer was that I don't need to do a SA.

Everyone has a tax-free trading allowance of £1000 in additional income, outside of their regular employment. So if your total earnings outside of your employment is less than £1000 you don't need to do anything. Above that and you need to declare it. Many accountancy websites explain this, here is one example.Zuzi said:

I don't recall seeing any of the usual disclaimer stuff about who was conducting the study and privacy data etc, there was just a whole screen of questions. I felt a bit suspicious and returned it, did anybody else do it?

Is anybody else struggling to get the Prolific Assistant to work since the site has changed to .com extension? I've signed in again this afternoon but the widget is still showing last update 10.47 this morning and error. I don't know how to kick it back into life again. I'm using Firefox.

Not sure whether you access the site from your bookmarks, but it might be worth trying to access from a Google search, then manually typing in your log in details.
I had to manually type in my log in details, rather than use password manager.
