I don't remember, I think it was a post here that said it counted as self-employment.

That might have been me, apologies for any confusion. As I'm self-employed anyway, I was thinking of adding Prolific earnings to my general SE income. But I'll investigate if I can keep Prolific earnings as a minor side issue for income

Just had an AI, where the bot quoted details of a real criminal conviction. How did I know it was real? The person was a parent at my son’s school!  :D

I've clicked a confidentiality clause, remember. So not mentioning names and keeping details vague enough.

Prison for 7 years for financial fraud. I knew that already, as it was the talk at the school gates for a long time. What I didn't know was the full details of what they did and an overview of how.

Further to the tax discussions, I think Prolific do view it as income. However they don't report it to the Inland Revenue. Seems like they view people as self-employed so it's an individual's decision whether to report it themselves or not.

How much have I earned from Prolific, and do I have to pay tax? – Participant Help Centre

And I'm not advising anyone to do one thing or another! I just looked up what Prolific say about it.

From what I've heard elsewhere, I get the impression that if your overall income is much below £12,570, so there's no income tax payable in any case, HMRC would sooner you didn't bother them with it, regardless of how much of that income comes from self-employment. The £1000 self-employed income threshold is really so that they don't have to expend resources processing self-assessments from everyone on PAYE who makes a bit of pocket money from a hobby or side hustle.
  • Does this sound right?  I have been with Prolific for nearly three years.  I am a basic rate tax payer.

If, for three consecutive Tax years I earn in total, per full Tax year, under £1000 from Prolific, would that count as the (<£1000/year) treating Prolific income as income from a hobby or side hustle?

If that is right enough I would not have to worry about filling in a tax form as my pension is taxed at source - PAYE and I have the 'standard' tax code?

To be on the safe side I have kept 20% 'aside' from my Prolific income.  I don't want to cheat but I really do find it a struggle trying to work out exactly where I stand with tax.

    Thank you for any confirmation.

The crucial thing is that your earnings from Prolific PLUS any other side hustle should be less than £1000 in any one tax year.

Thanks MollyR.  I only have my pension/PAYE income,  some interest on modest savings (within the 'tax free' amount allowed)  then, finally, my income from Prolific.

I'm not sure what would count as side hustle, but I really don't have any other income apart from the ones mentioned above..  If my less than £1000 per tax year income from Prolific does not count I would be very pleased.
