That might be a relief for me then. If it is as much as that for one full tax year I should be under that amount over two years..
I'll go over the information in the link tomorrow, thanks.

Thanks very much, libra10. I'll look into it.1

I think when it was mentioned here before someone said it counts as income from self-employment, but I presume it's ok to register as not self-employed? Being self-employed seems like a lot of unnecessary faff; they surely don't expect people to set themselves up as a business just to do online surveys?

The link explains in detail about whether you are liable to pay any tax, including personal allowance, interest savings, and other details.

If you earn less than £18,570 a year from income and savings interest, then all your savings interest is tax-free thanks to tax-free savings and the starting savings rate. This is different from the personal savings allowance – though it complements it – but how these allowances work in practice, and who qualifies, is a bit more complex...

This would be appliable to anyone not in employment

The suggestion was that regardless of my overall income being well under the threshold, I would have to do a self-assessment if I earned more than £1000 from self-employment, and that Prolific studies (which I have earned more than £1000 from in the past year) count as self-employment. Is this the case, that I would need to register as a business (which seems to be what registering as self-employed involves)? Surely not? This seems absurd. Doing online studies and surveys is clearly not a business.
