That's very interesting, am I correct that there are different prices for different areas now?....................

Goes back to the Electricity Nationalisation Act of 1947 when the 12 Area Boards were set up. Previously all the different companies had different rates as well.
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Why do I think I am subsidising dual fuel customers?
I haven't seen a tariff in a long while that offered a Dual Fuel Discount. Indeed it has been cheaper for many years for me to have different gas and electricity suppliers.
So no you aren't subsidising anyone.
Electricity is expensive so if you have to use it for heating, you will pay a lot more than someone like me who uses gas. (Massive generalisation I know)
The only way to save money is to search out the best energy deals for your usage and reduce energy used.

Absolutely, they do exist but generally aren't the cheapest. Mine looked to be about £50 cheaper per year taking 2 companies for different length contracts but it didn't seem worth the hassle!
  • Well if they aren't cheap I wouldn't see them. Generally only check the cheapest 10 or so. Not much use if the discount doesn't make the tariff competitive.
  • Switched to Eco 7 in December and immediately ran into difficulties with their amateurish website, although they were perfectly efficient when it came to setting up my direct debit and taking the money! Just received notification of a price rise. I'll be switching again very soon as I don't trust them at all.

Earlier in this thread I wondered whether Eco7 were operating a Bait & Switch scam or were just incompetent. I now know that, at best, it's the former.

I was with Eco7 for dual fuel and I switched both to a new company. Fortunately I cancelled the DD immediately, because there was more than enough credit to cover the final weeks.

However, although both fuels were successfully switched over and billed by the new company, when Eco7 eventually bothered to issue a new statement with the final readings I was amazed to see that they hadn't closed my electricity account; this made my credit balance much smaller than the true amount they owe me.

I can't help thinking that this is a deliberate scam, and that Eco7 hoped I wouldn't notice that they were billing me for electricity supplied and billed by the new company.

Essentially this is all Ogem's fault for failing to insist that suppliers offer Variable DDs and for allowing such stupidly glacial timescales for switching and refunding credit balances. If you switch your mobile phone to a different company it all happens the next working day, so why should energy be any different? For many people who are Just About Managing, having to wait EIGHT weeks to have several hundred pounds refunded could be a major deterrent to switching.

I'm so glad I left because since then there's been yet another massive increase in Eco7 unit prices and standing charges.

Come on MSE, warn against Eco7 instead of merely claiming that there's not yet enough feedback, and give Ofgem a good kick to wake them from their cosy slumbers !

Similar thing happened to me Gerry1and so I now conclude that they are as cunning as their trading name suggests

I first gave them the benefit of the doubt when I left, but your report has confirmed my suspicion that they do try it on.

When I left I did it at a point when I estimated I would be roughly at break-even point, taking into account that I was £40 in credit.

Because of the credit, I told them I would stop my DD and settle the final bill by debit card, to which they agreed.

At leaving date I calculated they would owe me £0.96.

For some bizarre reason the final gas reading has to go through some third party industry standard process (heaven knows why they cannot accept the final reading) and came back some 440kwhrs more than my final reading, which I calculated would now put me about £12 in debt to E7E.

Meanwhile I get a curt email reminder that I have stopped the DD and so I had to contact them and reiterate what I had agreed with their accounts department.

I then get an estimated a bill for £70 (going two weeks past my leave date) which, after contacting them, told me to ignore, and await the final bill and again confirmed that I would pay this with a debit card.

I received another bill that did not make much sense that I just ignored and eagerly awaited the FINAL bill so that I could be rid of them.

A couple of weeks passed then I got a ‘phone call from the Foxy people asking me to settle the bill by debit card as agreed, despite still not receiving a final bill.

How much ‘I said: ‘£70’ was the Foxy reply.

‘Never in a million years, it is about £12’ I retorted.

‘You keep tabs on things. Wait a minute’ said the Foxy man.

He returned and the Foxy man said ‘yes you are right’

I paid him the £12 and I thought to myself ‘the Foxy man was trying it on’

Two weeks later still no final bill but showing my account balance to be zero.

    Thank Heaven, I am free.

    If you have received your January invoice you will have seen you are being charged the new rates now;

Good luck in trying to stay on the old rates!

Had a call yesterday to say that I'll be paying the old rate for gas until 10th March, effectively giving me my 30 days notice. They admitted that they never sent me a price increase notification.
  • I have been with E7E since April, and stuck with then through four price rises and the DD fiasco..
However I thought they were still the cheapest for E7, but using The energy club comparison I discover the tariff for E7 is at least two price rises behind the REAL one.

I am sadly switching to EDF fixed for fifteen months ... Looks too good to be true, and no doubt I will have a hard job getting my £100 credit back from E7E we will see.

Come on MARTIN if you want to offer comparisons you need to keep up with all the Company's ... or at least offer a warning that they may not be up to date ..
