I read online that the fat in mincemeat is a left over from when it actually had meat in it, so I found a recipe for sugar free, fat free mincemeat and made some on Thursday. Today I made some mince pies and the mincemeat is really nice. We had very little brandy so we used some alcohol - don't really know what as it was all in Japanese - probably Saki. The alcohol comes through just fine lolClutter free wannabee 2021 /52 bags to cs. /2021 'stuff' out of the placeYOU CANNOT BE ALL THE GOOD THAT THE WORLD NEEDS, BUT THE WORLD NEEDS ALL THE GOOD YOU CAN BEtaken from Shelbizleee on YouTube - her copyright0

Using up what’s left in the fridge before going away on Friday, made two batches of spiced butternut squash soup (2x soup maker jugs) which we will have today and tomorrow then take the rest with us, now hoping to find a bit of space in the freezer for the bagged up L/O turkey and ham.0

Well done everyone for all your hard work this past year in not binning as much as normal. Hopefully we can go through into the new decade using up as much as we can and with a bit of inspiration and careful forethought new recipes will appear on these pages.
I am surprised at how its become almost second nature now when I look in the fridge or cupboard and think ,hmm.. what can I turn that into.:)
I am going back to my own home tomorrow and will have a good audit of my stocks to see what I can come up with for the coming month
Happy New Year to all my fellow LFHW friends

hello all.
i have a jar of cranberry sauce (minus 1 teaspoonful) leftover from crimble dinner. does anyone have any ideas how to use it please?
i have seen lots of muffin etc recipes that use it but they won't get eaten and therefore cause more waste so don't really want to do that.
ideally i'd like a savoury recipe
many thanks0 -
Purpleybat you can add a good teaspoon to sauces when making beef casserole or a nice glaze to meatballs. It also works well with Brie and bacon in a sandwich
Edit - sieve the sauce and add to vodka or gin to make a cocktailLife shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin0 -

Its really tasty is you spread the cranberry sauce onto the base of pastry when making sausage rolls. You could also add it to the bottom of a cheese quiche.0 -
The start of 2020 has not been too wonderful in my LFHW quest - half a pot of cream binned, excess takeaway chips put out for the birds, ineffective dried yeast binned & pot recycled & a bag of mouldy sprouts composted. I will resume proper LFHW after we return from a winter sun holiday to the Dominican Republic

My resolution (one of them) is to reconnect to threads that kept me on the straight and narrow, one of which is this.
Quite pleased that, over Christmas, the only food I threw away was 2 spoonfuls of mash and a small portion of coleslaw, that I confess i'd forgotten about :T still not too bad, methinks. Also avoided most supermarket shopping for a couple of weeks, except for bread and milk. Yesterday I did go shopping but only spent £60 which, given the fridge was pretty empty, I was really pleased with.
OH and I are on holiday from Tuesday for a week, one reason the shop was so low, but the children will be here.
Another resolution is to not eat meat unless it's avoidable (i.e. going to friends for dinner, or if veggie options in pub / restaurants are particularly unappealing) so am going to be cooking up a storm for the freezer.I wanna be in the room where it happens0 -

Buy some puff pastry, put squares into muffin cases, fill with Camembert & top with cranberry sauce & a bit of rosemary.“I want to be a glow worm, A glow worm's never glum'Coz how can you be grumpy, when the sun shines out your bum?" ~ Dr A.
