Caronc I grew up in the 70 s , and that sounds like my house , I'm one of 7 though my eldest sister is 17 years older, so we weren't all at home at same time for most of those years. I was brought up in a pub ,till I was 11, that my grandad was licensee of, so my dad did his day job , as a loom overlooker then helped behind the bar , with mum at night.
Holidays were in s.devon heck of a drive with all us piled in sat on top of sheets and towels. I sat on mums knee in the front, till baby brother arrived.
We moved to a big house after the pub, and we never had a phone or central heating and I got married in 1980. Twin tub and hung on an clothes horse or the airer in the back room that was let down from the ceiling.
The Billy Connoly joke about coats on the bed always makes me laugh.
We used to get dressed under the covers. After running from the warm gas fire in the front room to the frozen bedroom.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
Wort - bet you grew up vowing never to be cold again if you could help it once you grew up?:rotfl:
Quick magic through the ether to my place - and you could sit on the sofa with central heating going nicely/fire could be put on as well and there's two throws and a single duvet that could be put on top of you. I'd still have several throws and my two double duvets left to put on top of myself...0 -
Exactly Money !
They say if you grew up with the cold you don't feel it like those who always had warm, that's a lie!!!
I'm always freezing.
My 13.5 tog duvet on my bed had a fur throw over it then 2 thick fleece dressing gowns last night, with flannel bed sheets/pillows and cover.Focus on contribution instead of the impressiveness of consumption to see the true beauty in people.0 -
Oh I definitely grew up vowing as an adult I'd live in a sufficiently heated and well insulated house. I'm sensible with my heating but definitely don't skimp in cold weather.
PN - I was told off the other week too for inadvertently breaking the rules by posting a money off link on the wrong board. I wouldn't let it get to you:)
My mobile phone is always on my person, either in a pocket or on a lanyard round my neck. It's that or an alert system that I don't want to get:cool:.
I've just had the remains of yesterday's egg/cheese mayo on some toast along with a large mug of tea and some dried apricots. That should keep me going for a bit. I've some LO ratatouille from last night so I think it will be getting popped in a pan with some veg stock and spoonful of soup pasta for a quick minestrone type soup for lunch. If my shopping comes I'll have a ham & coleslaw sarnie with the soup:).0 -
The trouble with the warnings and threats is that there's no "right to reply" or query.... and so it's frightening.
Somebody anonymously didn't like something said in one post - often because they read it wrong I bet.... and I got TWO for one post, and it was headed "Final Warning". I'd had a couple last year and if you look where it says in your profile about infractions (again, silly unsubstantiated punishments) ... they say they were expired.
So you end up unable to speak out, or query ... and feel threatened and bullied because of something you don't think is justified.
It can be mentally debilitating and puts you into a low mood. Especially as there's no clear/open route to being able to understand how you can be on a FINAL warning, when your sheet is clear as any previous ones were "expired".
*sighs*
Sucks to feel bullied and powerless to enquire.0 -
I have a fleece duvet cover and have 're-purposed' a fleece throw as a bottom sheet. I'm toasty warm despite having no heating in the bedroom.
If I feel cold throughout the day, I find snuggling on the sofa with a hot water bottle in the small of the back does wonders.
Apparently there are power cuts in our region. So far unaffected.0 -

).
Perhaps it's my age... :rotfl:0 -
Having been brought up in the fifties I well remember the bedroom windows being iced up on the inside, feet being always frozen and only one heat source usually an old fashioned coal kitchen range. My idea of film star luxury was to have a house that was warm, fitted carpets and even - gasp - a telephone.
I still feel lucky that I can have the central heating on and can be in a comfortable house with things like an automatic washer, tumble drier etc.0 -
We did have a telephone ... but nobody to call. That was just some quirk because dad bought a house that had one and mum "put her foot down" and said she'd pay for it if we kept it.
There weren't many calls, but my older sibling had just moved away from home 30 miles and we had moved 3-4 miles further out/away from family. I think maybe mum did it "just in case" my older sibling wanted to call as she was away from home.
I remember that if we wanted to use it we had to pay - 2p or 4p depending how long you were there .... and dad would loiter while you called and urge you to hurry up and get off the phone. As the room was unheated it wasn't something one did often. We also received few phone calls as most people didn't have a phone.0 -
Pastures
I am so sorry that the bureaucracy is making you feel scared and anxious. It must be so unsettling as it comes out of nowhere. I hope things get sorted. Would posting on forum problems help to resolve things or would it worry you more?0
