Within the 24 hours of the first poster posting that they have received it, how many others who haven't will institute claims for compensation.

No that bit of the T&C just means the payment will be made BY 13 April - that is simply the name of the person making the payment.

They're only mutually exclusive if you read 'by 13 April' and 'before 13 April' as being synonymous, which is not necessarily the case. My prediction is that they'll pay out on the 13th to all accounts still open on that day....

That's my thinking. Although the terms state that it will be paid BY that date, which could have meant anywhere from account opening to then.

But stating accounts closed before that date won't get the cash paid pretty much says it WON'T have been paid by then.

Neither actually confirms that as being the day of payment. But would suggest that.

My money is on payment at 23:59 on 13 April (or even over that weekend since the 13th is a Friday). I reckon there's a good chance the website will be closed "for maintenance" till Saturday morning. As might have been predicted, NatWest have created themselves a logistical nightmare which will, no doubt, have its problems.

  • Did anyone get a letter through from Natwest Customer Tax Operations on Friday? Still waiting for the money myself and then had this letter come through - found it strange as never been asked about this stuff for banking before

Shall we take bets on when they will start paying the switch reward into accounts?

I'm down for close of banking on Thursday 12th, just to surprise us all.

As "by" and "before" are synonyms of each other, and one of the many definitions of "by" is "indicating a deadline or the end of a particular time period.", the two statements are clearly mutually exclusive.

Natwest have form on paying these sort of things late. They had a bonus 'reward' on their credit cards in December of 10% back on Contactless spend, which was supposed to be paid on (not by, before, around, but *on*) January 20th. I think it was the end of the next week it actually arrived.

Legally "By" should be read as including the day/date specified, "Before" should be read as excluding the specified day/date.

My money is with eskbanker. "By 13/04" allows the payment to be made on the 13th whilst complying with the T&C's. "Before 13/04" means the account being closed on 12/04 or earlier.

Given that people would be free to close their accounts on 14/04 (arguably 13/04) I doubt NatWest will get too up tight if they make the payment on 13/04 and people close their account the same day, but personally I wouldn't take the risk as there is nothing lost in keeping the account (other than pride for those people who consider such things important). :)
