What are you making for dinner?

We didn't need mushy peas with the lo fish & chips - so much of it there.
Baked a Victoria Sandwich and a Lemon Sandwich.
Went out to an unexpected meeting and filled the cakes when I got home.

Took mystery mince out of the freezer this morning, it’s either beef or pork, if beef then we’ll have a chilli, if pork then, pork Thai meatballs 🤗

someone is using the pork chops/steaks to make stir fry tonight.  to be served with noodles.  might be me.  might not.  organisational skills are not improving much.

Got some lo sausages and bacon in fridge to use with tomatoes, egg and baked beans. Oven is not going on today.

Defrosted pork shoulder steaks. I chopped them up and browned them off then added a chopped onion I had plus some all purpose seasoning. Then added rice with vegetable stock and water. Simmered. Added in frozen mixed peppers, peas and sweet corn I had in our freezer. Half a carton of frito, ginger powder, black pepper and let it all cook. Tasted amazing and used up things we had

I have started cooking for the dog (I studied the label on one of his dog food cans and realised it didn’t actually contain a lot of meat for the price!) so now I am trying to clear one drawer in the garage freezer to be dedicated solely to his food. 

I’ve defrosted two portions of bolognese meat sauce for us tonight, which we will either have as spaghetti bolognese or a pasta bake, depending on how much time I have today.

Elsewhere I used to see a lot of recommendations for a BARF diet.  (what a horrid name...) Basically it's raw food so more like what dogs would eat if they didn't have people opening tins for them.  As I recall raw chicken wings were a big part of it.  I only mention as chicken wings often seem to be YS at shops so cheap and also as being raw needs no cooking and therefore won't use any expensive energy (other than to freeze)

Thanks Brie - I have been reading up quite a bit on the whole make-your-own-dog-food stuff, but I am not convinced by the raw food diet. I know lots of folk swear by it, but there are also a worrying number of cases of dogs becoming seriously ill from ingesting parasites from the raw meat. I just don’t know enough about it yet so am playing safe by providing cooked meals for him. 

There’s a very helpful butcher in a nearby town who sells me lambs hearts and ox liver slices very cheaply, and a local farm selling 500g packs of bone-free minced beef (intended for a dog’s raw food diet) for £1.25 so I can make a pressure cooker full of that (with some added chopped carrot, butternut or sweet potato, plus a handful of rice) for about £4.50 which feeds Rufus for breakfast for 7 days on top of his all-in-one Worker Dog dry food. It works out about the same price as tinned dog food ‘meat’.

The lovely butcher also gives me a bag of meaty bones for nothing, which I chuck into my very biggest slow cooker overnight with vegetable peelings and plenty of water to make a superb bone broth. Rufus gets a mug full of this poured over his evening meal of the dry stuff, and he goes absolutely mental for it. I’ve never seem him so happy!

I’ve only been cooking for him for about a month but his coat is looking lovely and glossy (if that is even possible for a Wirehaired dog!).

Sorry to go off on a tangent (but I thought it might be of interest to other dog owners).  Back to talking about hooman food ……. 😂
