Last night's trip out to see the lights was very good but the spectacular house that I missed last year was missed again.  I think they only had the lights up for a week or slightly more!  Will have to head over there on Christmas eve next year!!

But M&S was a success - scampi for me, plaice for OH (who helped tidy away some scampi as well....) along with the big chips.

Tonight we're having the smoked/raw fish assortment discounted at M&S (£10 instead of £20, last they had and bbd next week so that's fine - wouldn't have got it otherwise).  Following that will be the huge 1 rib rib roast split in 2 and done on the bbq and more chips.  I believe there's a pepper sauce to enhance the experience and a lush looking cheesecake to nibble afterwards.

We will get to the cheese bought for Christmas eventually - maybe tomorrow or Sunday....and then some time after that I have to get serious about not eating like a absolute piggy.

Hubby s birthday today, he wanted roast beef and Yorkshire pudding. As a veggie myself I did a veggie lasagne and did roast beef and trimmings for hubby and brother (who lives with us). 2nd roast in a week for me to do, 3rd roast I have done in 2021. Everyone so full that chocolate fudge cake and cream relegated untill tomorrow!

The (fairly local) Community Fridge was awash with all sorts of free goodies yesterday morning - I picked up potatoes, leeks, shallots, red onions, mushrooms, red and green peppers. chillies, aubergines, carrots, cauliflower, tenderstem broccoli, lettuce piccolino tomatoes, avocado and sweet potatoes (as well as bread, fruited tea loaf, chocolate chip shortbread, mince pies). It's all in completely perfect condition, most of it from the nearby Waitrose, and I can't believe that it would otherwise have ended up being sent to landfill.

The tall freezer in the garage doesn't have so much as 1cm spare space in it now - my plan was to inventory it this week, but it seems a bit overwhelming right now.

I am turning lots of the veg into a vegetable cheesy bake for tonight and Monday, and making some cauliflower cheese to go with the roast pork tomorrow.

Oh - roast pork and cauli cheese!!  When's dishing up time please?!!?!?!!!!

Not aware of any community fridges round here....any idea on how to find them?  Normally if I've discovered tinned stuff well within it's date that I know we won't be using I put it in the car to drop off at the food bank but fresh stuff is more difficult.

@Brie : go to hubbub.org.uk then look at the section “find a fridge near me”. There’s an interactive map of the UK - I’m fairly sure that’s I found the two near(ish) to me. They generally also have Facebook pages too so you could try searching FB for Community Fridge + your county.

Some Community Fridges/Larders charge a weekly subscription, and others (such as the ones I sometimes pop into) are free or you can just make a small donation towards the petrol costs of the volunteers who regularly race around collecting all the surplus from the supermarkets (and Hello Fresh .... there is a lot of stuff from Hello Fresh!)

Thanks C_J....unfortunately the nearest appears to be 30 miles away in Southampton.  What with petrol prices it will be cheaper for me to buy from the local Tescos.  But i'll keep an eye open in case that changes!

@Brie have you got the Olio app? Same kind of principle, to reduce food waste.

Dinner tonight was breaded haddock with some oven baked tomatoes in olive oil and balsamic, and fried up colcannon.

thanks for the idea of the Olio app.  my mobile is too stupid for apps so I'll have to see what I can get working on the pc.

Meanwhile last night's dinner....well it wasn't a disaster, it was in fact quite lush.  But OH was feeling a bit peaky so didn't want to cook and didn't want to have anything other than a bowl of soup and cheese on toast.  That would ahve been fine but he'd got some pigeon breasts out of the freezer and they couldn't be left.  So I ended up pan frying them in butter and serving with a couple of mini tartiflette from Lidl. (do look for these as they are lovely - shredded potato mixed with Robochon cheese made into fat patties to be baked in the over).  And Reader - I'm afraid I ate the whole lot.  Like I said - lush.  (and as we ended up watching some Gavin and Stacey that's my word for the day)

Tonight we're attacking the Christmas cheese mountain.  Just with rolls.  But we might get out the frozen prawn ring too.

We are having pie, we usually have this on new years day, but as this fell on a Saturday which is usually curry night we pushed it forward.

Served with roast potatoes and mushy peas and left over Christmas veg that needs preparing and cooking. No room in freezer, otherwise it would be going in there.
