Three years ago a friend collected a camera lens for me from a repair shop. When I went to pick it up, he'd lost it. He was apologetic but wouldn't let me put in an insurance claim, saying he'd pay for it (he never did). We haven't spoken for over a year now and he's 'unfriended' me on Facebook. Do I escalate it to something more serious?

Forget the insurance angle. Far too much time gone.
If it were me I'd just write it off and forget about it because you won't get the money.0 -
I think your boat has sailed. :whistle:0

Wouldn’t let you put in an insurance claim? What power did he have over you? :think:Value-for-money-for-me-puhleeze!

How do you lose a £700 lens? Stolen maybe but lose? My money would be on smashed when they dropped it or flogged down the pub. Anyway far too late now surely.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Was the "friend" a photographer?
Still got it? I wonder. . .
As already said though it's been left too long now, you'll be lucky to get it back.0 -
Have you asked the repair shop if they still have the lens?
Just in case your 'friend' pocketed the repair money.0 -
Why now? You can't 'force' him to do anything unless he wants to - and too late by miles to take any sort of 'enforcement' action. If you tried to 'escalate' the first question you'd be ask if why you left it so long...0

I would delete myself from Farcebook to avoid the risk of the ex-friend wanting to Re-Friend me.
Then forget about the whole thing and move on with my life."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
He 'wouldn't let you'. What a load of nonsense (like most of these dilemmas!). If you were eligible to claim on your insurance than you could have done so at the time.0
-
If you were stupid enough to not claim on your insurance at the time, you're also stupid enough to try taking your ex-friend to court now without any evidence to prove your claim.
Quit whining and move on, accepting your loss is your own fault.0
