I think there would be some merit in adopting the system used in large Japanese cities where you need you need to get a parking place certificate from the local police in order to register a car or change address.

Essentially, no parking place, no car.

Put a Vicar on Call sign in your windscreen and keep parking there.

Maybe look at JustPark. or knock up a few fliers....there maybe homes that have space on their drive where you pay far less than a car park, just a thought.

Or put a 'Satan on Call' sign in your windscreen and keep parking there.

If you can't find anywhere to park that you can afford, you can't keep the car. Would a bike be an option instead (either motor or push, depending on preference/storage options), and you can rent a car by the hour/day when you need one - or use cabs.

In my experience, even if you're legitimately parked down a side street, if people don't like you parking there they'll key your car and slash your tyres, you can't protect your car all the time and the police don't deal with car crime

I also got broken into once
And every car parked down my own side street had its wings mirrors kicked in, even though I had a permit
Yes that`s what happened to my 2 cars (company car and private ) when I lived in a busy terraced street.
If I had to park away from in front of my house eventually someone would key the body.Once I had both wing mirrors ripped off.
The OP could buy a cheap £25 folding bike which would easily fit in a hatchback type car and park in a more upmarket road and cycle home much quicker leaving the car in relatively safety

The OP could offer to sell their soul in exchange for a parking space.
