No sleep. Went to crafts. Very quiet. Brought stuff home to sort - a pile of Christmas stuff to be gone through and packed away for next year. Filled a paper sack so far and part way down the next one. Fighting to stay awake just now.

    Today was not a NSD

Had to buy milk (we are now on 16 ltrs a week) and bread and a few other bits.

Went into my fave charity shop and found 20 books by two of my favorite authors that I did not have. So I bought them. It ended up costing £7.50. Like I said, it is my favorite charity shop for books. I now have enough books to see me through to probably Easter. Books are classed as insulation aren't they? So technically it is MSE.

Woke up with a nasty cough but after a lems1p and a coffee it decided to go away. Hopefully it will stay away. Spoke to a mum-on-the-playground whose son (in DS3s class) is off with a V&D bug. That is not welcome either!

Was surreal this morning. No snow on my road, no ice or snow on my car, drove all of 20 meters and turned on to a side road and every car and pavement was dusted in snow. I know it has to stop somewhere, but it was really odd to see.

    Keep warm lovely Turtles,

KerryWoman, you had your mum for a long time, and have been without her for such a short time, so enjoy your daffodils, soon they will spring up in all the parks and gardens and every time you see one, you will remember how much your mother loved you. You were truly blessed. Good luck with the job hunting.

    Hi all turtles :j

Kerry Woman I reiterate what others have said re your Mum & if you can take pleasure in the daffodils that she so loved that is lovely. I lost my dad recently & always feel closer to him when in the garden, I think that is why I always feel better if I can get out there.

Janus So this is a time to look forwards - where do you want to be in 12 months from now? I would like to have the house much clearer. Slow progress but small steps.. 5 years? House completely clear & clutter free, DD settled in her own home. 10 years? Spending half the year in Ireland, half here

Activity. This is a BOGOF one. Take up a new hobby or resurrect a new one. Finished - all but the toes - another pair of socks. Reviewed the ones I found half-finished - not sure whether to finish as they are, or frog & re-knit. They are in expensive wool, I know that so don't want to waste it with a poor job.

ALSO, be active. Keep moving. Snow still here & lots of heavy rain, forecast more snow for tonight so not a lot of gardening done. Did keep on the move trying to declutter the kitchen, work surfaces are looking much better. Chucked old knife block with blunt knives; have unpacked new one bought last year when on offer. Then peeled some very sorry looking apples, from our garden last year, & cooked the fruit for crumble. Discovered that these new knives are very sharp - now have frilly thumbs!!

    Non-negotiables:
-18 NSDs (if not, why not?) now 10/18

-your budgets are set by the start of the month and are fixed. Nearly - think I will say £250 for us & all animals, should not need near this amount so all saved will go to another project. Filling in book with receipts, found most of them. Kept receipts from shopping, will fill in book later. Still to do.....

-£5 to foodbank / charity Finally managed to do this! Today received item from charity

-pay money to your debts FIRST - do not wait to see how much is left at the end - and live within your budget Do not have debt but have a cc paid off in full each month, which gives vouchers I use at Christmas. Has been a v spendy month, will cut down as much as possible. Will be prepping to start selling some of this stuff ASAP. Tomorrow I will sort at least a few things. Didn't do this..

-meal plan Lunch was hm mushroom soup & sourdough for me; DH had an ancient c/o pasty I found. supper was tagliatelle with sausage , leek & rosemary, YS focaccia & apple crumble & ice cream

Unabashed, unambiguous, unconditional, undaunted, undivided, unerring, unshakeable devotion to your goal(s). [more on this later] Do not exercise as was - like many people - put off at school. And I was also rubbish! Put off swimming by being pushed into the deep end (by the swimming teacher!) which instead of having the desired effect of getting me swimming, actually nearly drowned me..

Always plan your meals; always take a shopping list; always take your lunch to work and drink + snacks when out and about; avoid all coffee shops, vending machines, work canteens... Making shopping list for tomorrow now, don't work outside the home but do a bit of voluntary work. Deviated a bit from shopping list, but not much, took fruit to work & get free brews..Don't drink coffee & never go in coffee shops..will try & take snacks, drink when out & about..

Reduce, re-use, repair, re-gift, recycle, recover, refuse! And read. Reduced things by chucking out carp from kitchen, more to go. Repaired office light. More reading shortly..

You are the key to reducing your debt, living modestly, keeping as fit and well as you can. So look after yourself - physically, spiritually, mentally and emotionally. Determined to look after myself & pamper a little each week, have already had a face pack yesterday, need to do things for myself instead of being a in constant rush doing stuff for family Not much on this front tbh, seems pointless.

I want to re-introduce Bob's s t r e t c h challenge for January: how much extra can you earn / save off your food shop / move / remove.NO sign yet of said shoe but will keep identifying items to sell. Have realised that we have a ton of food still to eat, that's before we start on the 2 chest freezers (& little one inside fridge). There's only 2 of us (but often 3)..Have been accepted again for PO survey so now have added to stamp collection. In with a chance of a winning bonus but am spectacularly unlucky in that regard so won't count on it!

Would joining the 1% thread help you? Or the MFW for 2018? Or the pay off all your debts by xmas18? Does reading mrmoneymustache or frugalwoods inspire you? Have joined Frugalwoods challenge already & will be interested to see how it pans out. Have been on MMM & introduced his philosophy to DH, applied the principles so we are now MF - wish we had done it years ago, wasted so much time/money etc. in the past..
New start JAN15 - NOT BUYING IT 2015 . Long haul DFW #145 : 2011 DEBTBUSTING : £5500 OD GONE, £2000 OD - GONE £93,610.30 cc & loan debt - GONE 27.6.14 FINALLY DEBT & MORTGAGE FREE :happyhear

Does anyone else follow Mrs Frugalwoods? I find the Marie Kondo approach to decluttering 'a bit much' so was interested in this alternative real life approach :) If anyone is interested, you can read at http://www.frugalwoods.com/2018/01/17/how-decluttering-saves-me-money-time-and-stress/

I used to read her blog but I started to find her a tad smug. They are very fortunate that they could save 70% of their salary to realise their dream, how many people can realistically do that. Then when they move miles away they still have a very convenient work set up that just doesn't come along in real life imo.

Yesterdays slush is now ice. The school run was OK as the main roads are clear but I need, really need to run and the paths are slippy and it will be too muddy in the woods.

Did another big declutter yesterday and have another large bag in my car for donation, it was DD's room yesterday and the junk just kept coming. I did however list 2 vintage toys that she had and one sold in 5 minutes. I could probably have got more but we were happy with it and aren't greedy.

Plan for today is to drop off the charity bag, post the ebay sale, call in to the upholsterers to get a price for some slip covers for two seat cushions on my faux leather sofa as they have cracked through wear but the rest of the sofa is perfect. Also dog walk, run, work, cook and do the school run.

    Hi Everyone,

I hope you are all keeping safe in the snow! Our office is closing slightly earlier to allow people to get home in plenty of time.

Rubbish at my NSDs this month, never had such a bad month, still only on 5. was hoping yday would be one but then I got a voucher code for hotel parking & so I booked that, Again, disappointed about my spend but still glad I did as in the long run it will save me money, Ended up paying 40 pounds for the week right next to the terminal. we usually use the Jet parks plus, but it was a few quid more to just park at the terminal & with two LOs I thought it was well worth it.

I have put my name forward to come in tomorrow for some over time, so that would make up for that.

  • Hi everyone
Just wanted to send love and hugs to Kerrywoman and anyone else that needs them. It's a tough time for sure - my cousin died very unexpectedly before Christmas and I still can't quite believe it now. Grief goes at its own pace though.

And I got lots of free exercise today because I had to dig my car out of the snow on our driveway...
