:D what a great idea JCR, I remember trying to fill canneloni, argh that is a nightmare. I do have a metal icing thingamy so might give jam buns a try this weekend seeing as the boys are now bouncing about again (usually a sign they are ok!)

**stamps feet** I want a donut maker too. :( Could ask for one for Christmas if I could think of somewhere to store it, new house did mean smaller :( kitchen and I struggle to get what I have in it.

Maybe if I reduce food stocks I would have room, but then I'd not feel as 'comfortable', bah!
One day I might be more organised...........

  • Thanks for your thoughts everyone, OH has been promised cash on Monday morning so fingers crossed. If not then he wont be going back to work there.

Really not what we needed right now, I was made redundant in September when DD was 3 days old and everything I earnt covered our bills/rent/mortgage (shared ownership flat) exactly every month. They gave me redundancy pay that covered 2 months of bills, so October and November payments. We've been scrimping and saving all month and managed to be let off our rent this month (to be paid back over the next couple of months) and mortgage has to be paid in December but doesn't matter what date so I can pay that at the end of the month. We just need the money for council tax and other bills. I have planned everything to the last penny and we need £400 (2 weeks wages) from OH to clear in my account before 6th Dec direct debits. If I had known he wouldn't get paid I wouldn't have done a big Tesco shop, I wouldn't have done more Christmas shopping... etc. It's not the end of the world as my parents could always help us out but I don't want to ask unless 100% necessary. Also there is a possibility of my new work giving me a small sub this month (I started on the day they ran payroll!)

We'll be fine, I'll just keep baking to take my mind off it lol! Just ordered the jam syringy thing from Amazon to cheer myself up, and a few other bits from that Amazon shop, £6.28 including their extortionate P&P! It's all things I was going to get anyway so I've actually saved a lot. And I used money from Quidco!

Dinner tonight was HM pizzas which were far nicer looking than the ones our friends had from Dominos tonight! I plan on making a pizza braid in the morning for lunch to use up the leftover pepperoni, and some gingerbread men for DS (he is obsessed!).

Have a good weekend everyone xx

  • Jen - hoping it all goes well for OH on Monday. Had a bit of a time of it workwise, haven't the pair of you? Things will get better. ;)

Jcr - clever ole you thinking of the custard thing. I love custard doughnuts, too, but hadn't even thought of that. Must write that down in my recipe file as I've got a brain like a sieve.

Made my iced buns and the lads loved them. :j Teenagers can be such critics but DS1 aged 17 (always a tricky age) declared them better than the shops. I have to admit I had a warm, fuzzy feeling and a lump in my throat. I added the spice and sultanas to the apple braid dough and iced half the buns and left the other plain for DS1. He said they were like hot cross buns.

Thinking about the custard thing again; have borrowed a Delia from the library and it has a recipe for Creme Patissiere. It says its a custard cream alterative. Does anyone know what it is and if you could use it in the buns or doughnuts. I was thinking about using it in vanilla slices (DH's favourite) although not sure how to start with them.

  • Morning all

Have woken up finally. AM knackered. Not feelign marellous it has to be said - i think I am on the verge fo some dreaded bug breakout. Bf has a bad cold, ben has a cold and then theres me. Even the dog seems to be sneezing alot lately - goign to find out his doggy sweater later and get it washed for him when i do find it - he needs somethign else ot keep him snug - his bed is currently 2 pillows in his basket so he snuggles in them in the night.

Baking wise doubt ill be doing much today - not feeling up to it to be honest - would rather just go back to sleep.

Decided to make a shepherds pie for tea tonight - have got mince to use up, and lots of veg i can bulk it out with. PLus think i might see about freezing a few portions and see if bf will take them to work with him seeing as its super cold lately. Anyone have any othre ideas of meals i can make to take to work for him?? he wroks driving rental cars and delivering them everywhere so want to make sure hes fed when he gets back to his yard or atleast make him alunchbox so he has stuff to eat whilst on the road. Thinking of making some of Twinks hobnobs for him as they are easy to eat whilst driving, would make a flask of coffee/tea etc but he doesnt drink it. Thinking of putting a pack of airways or strepsils in teh box though for him because he leaves at like 6am most mornings

i know he has access to a microwave so reheating is no problem but its bloody freezing in south wales - think we got to minus 2 dgrees at 8.30pm last night. and no my bedroom still has no heating so i think i will have to start wearing my pyjamas to bed now. fell asleep cuddled up behind bf and thats where i woke up too so must have been snug.

Got to put the extra duvet under bens bed tonight too because our heating is a bit funny in the night and it gets too hot.

So my to do list for today (bf is off work adn still in bed)
    drying done
    washing up done
    sheperds pie made
    special reindeer cards written
    list of little gifts needed
    elf gifts wrapped
    bens room tidied
    bens bed redone with quilt
    dogs jumper washed
    our bedroom cleaned round
    clothes away
    bed made
    bathroom tidied
    twinks hobnobs baked

wish me luck and hope you are all havign a good day
    Time to find me again
  • Sammy would he drink hot chocolate or HM soup in his flask? My DH is out the door early too, (5.30am) and its perishing so he takes hot drinks or food in a flask to keep himself warm.

oohh sammy i feel for u , no heatin in your bedroom, lots of hot water bottle and thick socks then, but i find once i'm asleep i end up taking it all off as get too hot, lol then wake up freezing. although no matter how cold it is , i hate having the windows fully shut in bedroom. drives hubby nut's , lol. but i like to have just a little fresh air, if that makes sence.

i'm just going to order one of these for my hubby , so he can take hot food to work. he is a sparks( electrican for anyone who didn't know) and at the mo he is running a site down on the harbour and he said it is freezing. so thought this will do the trick until he gets a lunch hut. when he does he take a cheap microwave to go in there. bless him.

as for the custard iced fingers , i didn't tell hubby. he walked in late last night from helping a friend and saw them , he went straight over and grabbed one . came into lounge tooka big bite was was shocked to find custard. he was so impressed. he said he thought they were just plain ones. so i been requested to make them again. my daughter ate one and loved it, she asked for another but i'd only made us 1 each.

i plan to make some more french sticks today. as it too cold to go out ., was -2 at half 8 this morning bbbbrrrrr.

a bakewell tart recipe would be wonderful. i did have one as i rememeber having to brake up plain ckaes for the topping, but i can't find it anywhere now.
