Jen, keeping fingers crossed that your OH does get paid, and finds a more secure job very soon.

JCR, let us know what idea you come up with for getting jam into the doughnuts - I'm trying to work out how to do it. When I used to deep fry them I used to put the jam in the dough and then gently wrap the dough around it but there has to be an easier way?

Waiting to hear how your 4-in-1 tests out too, great bargain! :)
... don't throw the string away. You always need string! :D

Mum *aka dinner lady* says they used to make a hole with a teaspoon/wooden spoon handle and beat the jam til runny then spoon it in...my tubey thing got filled with playdoh last night...still trying to get it out..:rotfl:
  • I was just thinking about these iced buns and it reminded me of a bun my mum used to buy me years ago. I'm sure they were called Devonshire splits. They were like a soft bread roll that were cut across the top and filled with 'toy' cream and a blob of jam. They were gorgeous.
Anyone know what I mean and, more importantly, how to make that type of synthetic cream?

DD&D - thanks for the pastry recipe... will have a hunt for xantham gum when I next go shopping :)

Another query though... the icing set you have with that ever so scary jam syringe tool.. where did you get it from? I'm really keen to make some jammy iced buns. specially as DH and DS's have been complaining that I am not baking at the mo (I am on a diet and if I bake I eat the goodies  think they would be supportive and join me on the diet wouldn't you?! ;) )

Jenagain - hope DH's wage gets paid and he gets a new job sorted.

thats a good idea with spoon to make hole for jam.

i am wondering if i removed some jam from the jam jar and put in a small bowl. i could maybe put the bowl into warm water and slightly melt the jam. as i only have value jam in and that quite firm.

will report back when i'm done.

My 'Proper' icing set I use all the time is a 1950's one by nutbrown..I love it! My dad brought one home from his national service for my mum so I grew up using it,searched for one of my own for years until finally got one from good old ebay :) I won a cookie set on there last week too (nutbrown again) they'll last me til I'm 90..

Jenagain fingers crossed for your partner and you, must be very worrying for you both. Well they say in one hand out the other, cheque arrives for £180 we were owed, bills for £210 come at the same time, argh, annoying!

Boys off school so no baking for them until better, have still cooked that mince which I just decided to make a giant bolognese sauce (freeze into portions to use to make things) and a massive chilli, weather changing (snow this morning!) made me want chilli. It's a bit hot so going to try the chocolate trick, hope it works, 6.5 litre slow cooker full of it to cool off. All I needed to get was some mushrooms for the bolognese as had the rest, I am now out of chopped tomatoes and passata, eeeekk I don't like running out of things completely! I've bulked both out with breadcrumbs to thicken it and some carrots I found which needed using very finely chopped with the genie thing, which is a bit useless tbh for that but it worked.
One day I might be more organised...........

ok i made my jammy iced bun's.

i have filled them but after staring at the jar of jam i just could see a mess being made.

so guess what i filled them with. ambrosia custard. i found a syringe that i was given when i has given some medicine for my daughter and has never used it. i made a hole in bun with a chop stick then wiggled it inside to make a pit inside. then i sucked the custard up with the syringe and injected it in. each iced bun took about 4 or 5 loads of custard.

and i then poured loads of icing on the top.

they look gorgous.hope hubby will like them when he gets home.

i've very chuffed with my custard filled iced finger buns.
