I've made the apple braid several times and could never quite get the filling right as I dont like crunchy apples in mine.So ended up resorting to using Bramleys and cooking the filling beforehand and it ended up tasting gorgeous.
I keep meaning to try the chocolate spread filling but always forget
Mollymop5 I have an old Bell Yoghurt maker that I got for a couple of quid from a boot sale years ago and its great. But you can make yoghurt in a thermos flask so theres no need for purchasing a yoghurt maker
Been busy this weekend cooking for the new freezer so not tried anything new this weekend

When i made it last week for the first time i used Mr T reduced double cream which cost 30p per tub standard size and this made just under 12 oz of butter. I forgot to add and salt but it has gone down a treat i also used the butter milk to make some scones and they were also a bit hit.
Hope this help's
It seems to have been the day for Baking today, i made the soft baps they have come out a treat and yes they are soft. BUT it was quite long winded started at 12 noon and all cooked and completed at 5pm
so either i went wrong and did extra rising (not sure) took a piccy so will post when i have downloaded.
Sorry to ask again Re: braid's anyone able to give details of the savoury type please. Can I just ask about the butter - how much does one large carton of cream make. cartons of cream are quite expensive and when I see them reduced in Mr T its invariably only a small discount. So just wanted to work out how much it costs. Obviously theres health benefits of using HM butter but given my budget Im not prepared to do it if its going to cost more than buying butter. Also is it double cream you have to use?£2 Pig has £86 in his Tummy. I am seriuosly Become a O/S Saver0 -
i've made a batch of twink's hobnobs with little extra syrup as it makes them more chewy,
thanks for this tip, I made these for the first time yesterday and some are ever so slightly chewy. we prefer them crunchy like biscuits (though chewy cookies are gorgeous) so next time I will slightly the reduce the amount of syrup. Also going to see if I can get away with putting less sugar in as I ate about 4 yesterday and dont want to get any fatter!0 -

Thanks Bebee, in that case its a bargain as a normal pack of butter is about 10 oz and costs about 85p ish. will keep an eye out for reduced cartos of cream.0 -
well I have had a baking day too, well a baking evening really, couldnt face it while the kids were under my feet so deposited them in bed for the night.
I currently have an apple and sultana traybake in the oven. I made a cherry version last weekend which was fab. Just realised after I put it in the oven that I forgot to line the tin with GP paper as per the recipe. I greased and floured the tin instead so hope it comes out ok.0 -

Have been trying to wade through this thread for ages but keep getting distracted by recipes and making them!
Can anyone help with a braid question please? Ive made the apple and sultana which was lovely but i wasnt too sure about the crunchy apple! Do you cook it first to make it soft?
Also i've decided to deviate and have chucked in some vanilla extract and i intend to use chocolate chips as a filling. Would it be okay to put the choc chips in the middle or should i mix up the flour/sugar/lemon juice with them to keep the braid moist in the middle?
Just thought i'd quickly post with the results of my earlier question! I divided the dough mixture by 2 so one is chopped, wrapped and in the freezer. The other is fair game for eating!
I ended up chopping a handful of hazelnuts and adding them to 2 bags of plain choc chips. I put most of them in the middle of the braids as per the apple/sultana recipe.
After cooking i iced whilst warm and sprinkled the rest of the choc chips and hazelnuts over them to give it a bit of extra crunch.
Obviously all the chocolate melted whilst in the oven so it tasted absolutely gorgeous straightaway (even if i do say so myself) although i did have a slice at work this evening and all the chocolate inside had set hard. It was lovely!
Thanks again D&DD, you have revolutionised my baking! :TBack and ready to save some money!0 -
all finished for the night:D
Jeni-b ooh just reading about your pinwheels I think a certain little man will love marmite ones in his lunch tomorrow..it's funny how you forget to do things!!Thanks
Bebee your butter looks lovely! I promise I'll look out some savoury braid links tomorrow for you.I know one of the variations was spread with Tom puree & sprinkle with cheese
Lesley I think thriftylady said you can freeze dough..I freeze uncooked pizza bases and they come out fine.I usually freeze stuff cooked too and its ok too
Yategirl well done with the applerings :T Glad they went down so well
Mollymop I have a little Kenwood electric one had it for years and you often see them on freecyclemight be worth asking for one? Its not automatic and all it does is literally keep the yoghurt at the right temp to set so if the easiyo is cheaper may be best to get that as it uses no electric, although I'm sure I saw on here somewhere people use flasks??
Sassa I've got most of the recipes you asked for I'll try to post some tomorrow for you
Mrs Doyle !!!! I'm putting on weight just reading that post lol...oooh chocolate!!!!!!!!! I'll bet the kids would go for that one!! Sorry I wasn't about earlier..bit of a day..I must try that one though..mmm wonder if the white choocie chips and raspberries would go well too *dribble*0 -
Could you use sweeteners as a replacement for sugar, you know either the granular or liquid ones
I just reduced the sugar to 6oz, as I found the recipe a bit sweet. It was fine."Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad"
