  • If you haven't got crumpet rings you can make them by forming strips of card into rings and covering with foil.

    to get the custand in i make a hole with a chop stick then use a syringe to fill it up.

    but DDD recommend a icing syringe which came with a long nozzle thingy and that works great aswell.

    i just suck the ambroisa up and then squirt it in.
  • A good day today, still no crumpets, but did the scones absolutely wonderful and very light. Made a flapjack, tried the banana muffins, not turned out as i would have wanted maybe bananas were't ripe enough, but dd likes them. also made a lovely courgette and tomato lasagne for tomorrows dinner- it smells so nice i am going to make some garlic bread to go with it, i had some chiken quorn left so bunged that in as well. Will get round to those crumpets as really fancying them now and hate the rubber ones for sale in the shops.

    Can I just ask about the butter - how much does one large carton of cream make. cartons of cream are quite expensive and when I see them reduced in Mr T its invariably only a small discount. So just wanted to work out how much it costs. Obviously theres health benefits of using HM butter but given my budget Im not prepared to do it if its going to cost more than buying butter. Also is it double cream you have to use?

    ive just been frantically scribbling down the crumpet and scone recipes. I have made scones before but not for ages. Both are things we eat quite a lot of, I like to have a constant supply of something like that depending on whats on offer (fruit loaf, teacakes, english muffins, malt loaf etc. as well if anyone has any recipes for those).

    I might do some more baking today as I have a free afternoon. Made the hobnobs yesterday which are fab so I think they will be a regular feature in our house. So I want to make something cakey today, will have to have a think.

    Have been trying to wade through this thread for ages but keep getting distracted by recipes and making them! :D

    Can anyone help with a braid question please? Ive made the apple and sultana which was lovely but i wasnt too sure about the crunchy apple! Do you cook it first to make it soft?

    Also i've decided to deviate and have chucked in some vanilla extract and i intend to use chocolate chips as a filling. Would it be okay to put the choc chips in the middle or should i mix up the flour/sugar/lemon juice with them to keep the braid moist in the middle?

    afternoon all.

    i've had a baking morning. kids were happy watching a dvd and playing together , hubby did some plastering. so i baked.

    i've made a batch of twink's hobnobs with little extra syrup as it makes them more chewy, also a victoria sponge with mixed fruit jam in middle , 2 dozen mini bakewell's ( half will be frozen and gonna give some to my mum for my dad lunch boxes for the week) and rock cakes hubby's fav.

    made sucha mess in the kitchen , i was covered in flour but loved it. taken some photos so will post them up later.

    I made the plait on Friday - chopped my apples quite small cubes, so they weren't really soft but not hard either - perfect in fact!

    Made it again on Friday night and this time spread up the middle with chocolate spread, put it on thicker than I would have done on a sandwich so it did ooze a bit ( would do less next time) but my two kids loved it! Iced the top a drizzle too - they love chocolate brioche but it is so expensive - they told me this was very yummy!

    The first time I made it I put icing on when still warm, then tried it with the next when it was cooler. Think I wil do it warm in future as it makes it more glazed.
    No Longer addicted to Boots! - Well not today anyway!! :blushing:
