Tried out fairy cakes for the first time in 'the beast' today, came out really well thankfully as the vultures started hovering before they were even in!! Even the cat wouldn't leave me alone :rotfl: *he's a wotsit for cakes*

Only thing I've got left to try out is the carrot cake type things in loaf tins.
Plan to stock up on these tomorrow!
Everything so far has cooked up really well, apart from the rolls..I need a bit of practise on timings/shelf placement as the first lot got burnt underneath, second lot on top..todays lot looked fine but come up a different texture to the old oven  weird!! I think its because the seals had gone on my old oven and this one puffs with steam when I open it as the seals are soooo good! Any suggestions??

Today meanwhile I cooked our first Willow Farm erm...*sparrow* :rotfl: :o
It was supposed to be a chicken (thought I'd try one out after watching Jamie et al) but obviously they must have had a run on the proper size birds so I ended up with the runt of the litter :rotfl:
Fortunately though there was enough on it for dinner just no leftovers
did taste very nice though :D:D

Hi Dee! Try a baking sheet on the shelf above your rolls? I find it helps if you are after a soft result?

That might help me. My dd wants naff white rolls for her burgers. I made some today and they're rather brown and too crisp. I was hoping for an airier result as well. I let them rise for ages and the kitchen was quite warm.

thanks Morwenna will try that tomorrow :D They all disappear still in this house whatever the colour/texture but its just bugging me that they've not been 'right' if you know what I mean...

The elements are in the top and bottom on the normal oven compared with the sides on my old one and the sides on the fan one compared with the top and bottom on my old one  I used to do them on 190c in the old fan one so might try them on a lower and higher temp too...

PurpleIvy I found a new *but messy* way of getting my sesame seeds to stick better I dropped them in a plate of seeds rather than brushed them with milk and sprinkled.:D

I know, it bugs me that I can't get two cake (sandwich type) tins on one shelf in my oven - and this is after two years!! The last cooker must have been about an inch and a half wider - and they say size doesn't matter :rotfl:

It's only ever men that will tell you "size doesn't matter" LOL"!

I haven't even got as far as sticking sesame seeds on the burger buns Dee. They're not sufficiently cotton wool like! Texture is too close. Rolls too 'heavy'.

I don't drop icing onto buns... I always dip!

I ummed and ahhhed for a long time before settling on my ideal combination of oven/hob etc etc when we did the new kitchen. I decided I didn't really need loads of rings, but did want 2 ovens. THought about getting 2 full size ovens, but in the end was told about a company that make a double oven, both ovens full size. Each has all the features i.e grill, fan, conventional etc. I also have a combination micro, which I use when it's just a small item I want to do. I've found them incredibly useful. Not sure that the hob is the best one for me, but it's OK and went for the one with extra width, with the same number of rings. It's useful, as I can stand stuff on there when it comes out of the oven. rambling on!

  • Well, D&DD thank you so much for your recipes. I made the apple braid dough rolls and filled them with strawberry jam and covered them in lemon icing and they were delish! I was so pleased because so far my bread making has been a little hit and miss and I've been trying out all sorts of recipes for pain de champagne, bread rolls, loaves of bread etc and sometimes been a little disappointed but these came out wonderful thanks again. I love keeping up with your thread and will endeavour to actually finish reading it and be up to date soon!
