  • I have grown a couple of lettuce by the back door and just pick the leaves that I need. Saves a fortune throughout the summer.
    Also planted garlic.

  • I have a chilli plant in my kitchen( love Thai food so this comes in handy!) My plant still has about 20 chillis so will pick and dry some.

  • I found this next one on flylady. Use the things that have been in your bathroom cupboard gathering dust as you discovered you weren't that keen on them. Swish them in your toilet bowl and it comes up sparkling. I also have some old shampoo in my toilet brush container.

I use creme bath in soap dispensers now.
Buying one cleaning product to do everything
    Batch cooking and meal planning
    Lists for the supermarket.

Off the top of my head, these are the things I always do.
  • it probably sound obvious but to buy a whole chicken, cook it and use it for at least 2 meals rather than buying chicken breast which is more expensive!

chopping up peppers and freezing them - therefore only buying when they are on offer.

  • Stardrops and white vinegar - I'm now bulk buying stardrops for my friend and her mum when I'm working away as we can't buy it locally!

...and that it's OK and good to be frugal, it's not just something odd to do because we're skint, better to be careful about what we spend and have empty credit cards than to buy what we'd like and worry about debt...(been there, done that, sent the tshirts to the charity shop!)

Definitely star drops as a tip, and the recipe for hobnobs...in fact I'm away to make some now!
  • I second the "cut everything in half" I only use half a dishwashing tablet, I cut my sponges in half etc etc. Everything now lasts twice as long.
Rubber chicken is the best. My personal record is 17 covers/meals . Havent been able to beat that yet. And I only buy a smallish bird as I prefer a organic one.

Also in the last few months, what I have learnt most from this board is that its ok to go without certain things or just use something different. "mend and make do" This applies to everything in my life now. And this has helped me to finally leave my job to spend more time with my little girl.
so in a way this board has changed my life more than I realised thank you.
    Happy days

Stretching meals such as Chillis, bolognaise sauce, by adding red lentils.

I've always added lots of onion, garlic, grated carrot, but never thought to bulk out before.

Learning at my ripe old age that even if it's not raining. if the paving stones remain wet the washing won't dry. So easy and totally foolproof (would need to be for me)
