    The customer from hell.

OP is paying presumably a lot of money for new windows, it’s not unreasonable for them to expect them to have been measured correctly.

No, I’m not, but I have measured and fitted windows and know they shouldn’t have large gaps around them if they are measured correctly. It’s not exactly rocket science.

Do you have anything constructive to add to this thread? Based on your posts so far it’s clear you do not so why on earth comment?

Some of it looks ok. Some of the gaps do seem a bit big to me.

Just my “non expert” opinion of course.

Have you asked them why there are such large gaps? What have they said?

Ok getting no response from the company. The fitters say they just fitters and cannot do anything.

Ok what shall I do now? Let them continue and dont pay the balance? Or tell them to stop and ask for my deposit back?

What do they look like from the outside? do you have a brick reveal?
From the photo it looks like the gaps are largest at the top and bottom, but the bottom is generally set by the external cill and the widow is wedged up to the correct height.
Different windows have different requirements for measuring, it also depends on how square the opening is and your wall construction

  • I bought a set of windows from Rationel. They told me to leave 11m all round (fitting in existing stone openings). I questioned this, my builder questioned it, but they insisted, saying it was to cope with out of square holes in older buildings. The windows arrived and the gaps looked awful. Was rendering the walls outside anyhow which covered the gap with a stop bead but I should have reduced the gap and ordered what I thought would be right.

In the process of ordering more timber windows from another firm and only taking 3-4mm off all round this time.

    Hi,

Starting today we getting new windows and doors fitted. Fitters fitted 6 windows so far with lots left remaining however 5 of those 6 windows have like huge gaps between the frames and the brick work. The fitters filled the gaps with expanding foam. Theres gaps on top, bottom and sides.

In mm what is the acceptable max gap size tolerance standards approved by the windows industry regulators such as Fensa etc.? Over what size in mm for a gap that becomes unacceptable? Also if there's gaps on all sides including top and bottom then what does it mean?

If a bad survey caused this then what are my consumer rights?

I asked the fitters and they typically said its normal and they do it all the time.

It is a Fensa Registered company and is backed by QANW insurance guarantee. I already paid 1/5 by deposit on my credit card.

As a consumer what are rights and liabilities when it comes to final balance payment? Do I pay them in full and claim off my credit card via section 75 consumer right or do I refuse payment to them until they make the windows again? However they already took few of our old existing windows away for recycling.

If I refuse payment and the company refuses to make windows again does the company have the right to take off the windows? However they took a few of our old existing windows away for recycling so if they want their windows back then how will we get our old windows back.

I am still waiting from the office response.

    Please advise.

Usually, the gaps 5mm. Any more, and the survey is questionable.
