A tenner a month is quite a bit to a student who has no job:eek:
Then they have a choice. Fit their expenditure to their income - which may well mean not having a car, poor lamb - or get a job.

Can they afford to maintain the car properly, safely?

If a student can't afford a tenner then how can they afford to run a car

Also makes no difference to the insurance if you ticks registered keeper different. Adding extra owners would devalue the second hand value.

Seems like a pointless exercise really.

If you seriously thing that a tenner a month is nothing to a student who budgets very carefully then it beggars belief that you bother to read anything on MSE. Students that study certain subjects and are on course for a First have precious little time to get a job. The car is a necessity due to what she is studying and where she need to get to without putting herself at risk. When you have a daughter in the same situation then you might understand, rather than making patronising comments.

So what about all the people who study for a degree and get a first while also working full time?. There is nothing wrong with doing things as cheaply as possible. But the way your talking it sounds like they would be unable to afford any repairs as they are required which can cause safety issues.

Eh? There can't be many of them unless its at a micky-mouse uni. How can you work full time and attend lectures?

Well there are lots of courses that only do 1 day of lectures a week and also some where they do them in the evening/afternoon to take into account of people working full time.

Well that media needs to be studied.

Noticed recently that there's a real trend for people to study criminology, interesting to see the employment prospects there.

This site is about saving money and this idea can save you a tenner or considerably more depending on how much you vehicle tax is. So why are you being critical of a money saving idea.

If a car's keeper changes but it stays within the same family then any switched on buyer will obviously take this into consideration when looking at the number of owners. Indeed I did so myself when buying a car that had been owned by a mother and then her son and in effect discounted the extra keeper.

Also some Insurance Companies do charge more if you are not the Registered Keeper. If they ask the question when you take out a policy and you fail to answer it correctly then you could be penalised later if you have an RTC.

Takman - Some big assumptions there!!

There are not going to be many who are able to work full time and get a first, although there may be some.

As the saying goes, "Every little helps". So why scoff at the idea. Her car has just been serviced and MOT'd for another year. So don't assume that she is driving around in an unroadworthy car.
