Avoiding Car Tax Overlap

If you are transferring the Registered Keeper of a car from one family member to another then there is a way of avoiding the car tax overlap. I have successfully done this on 2 occasions now and it works perfectly.
On the first occasion my wife gave her car to our daughter about 3 months before the tax was due to expire.
We then waited until just after midnight on the day that that it expired and then taxed the car from the first day of the next month using the online form at https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax using the Ref No on the V5C's green slip.
Later the same day we completed the Online Change of Registered Keeper form at https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle (This needs to be done between 0700-1900 hours.
We did the same thing a year later when we transferred the keeper from our eldest daughter to our youngest daughter.
I appreciate that this is only likely to work when transferring the Keeper either between family members or very close friends. However it is a simple legitimate way of ensuring that you don't have to pay double tax for the month in which the Keeper details are changed. :T:j

How?This service is available from 7am to 7pm.0 -
If the vehicle is staying in the family, why bother changing the RK?0

So you changed keeper on the 1st of the month. It's already a common thing now for people to buy motors at the start of the month.
You also don't have to wait for tax to expire since it will automatically be cancelled for the previous registered keeper anyway.
Nothing new here0 -
How much is that month's tax?
The average new car over the last year or two, before this April's changes, cost £30/year to tax.0 -
How?
........
Sorry I should have been more clear. We were able to tax the car just after midnight. You can do this online or by phone as the service is open 24 horus a day. But the Change of keeper did have to wait until after 07.00 hours.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0 -

Because the insurance company asked the question "Will the car be registered in her name". You can be sure that if you answered "NO", the price would go UP.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0 -

1.You have totally missed the point.
2. People do not usually wait to the 1st of the month to buy 2nd hand cars and even if they did both the seller and buyer would have to pay the tax for that month. The only way to avoid double tax on the month when the car is sold and to keep the vehicle taxed continuously is for the new owner to tax it the day after the old tax expires.
3. This is new advice that I have not read on MSE before.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0 -

I did that for a few years, it went up less than £10/year (so probably less than the additional keeper would have reduced the value by).0 -
