Avoiding Car Tax Overlap

Thanks for you kind comments.
AdrianC was correct in that you can just destroy the old V5C. In fact at the end of the process of registering a new keeper online you are instructed to destroy the old paper document.
If you still have some month's tax left on a vehicle and you notify the change of keeper on the last day of the month, eg. November, I suspect that the new keeper will have to tax it from the beginning of November. You could declare it Sorn but if you do this the new keeper will be unable to tax it for 5 days. As this is the minimum period that must elapse before a vehicle declared as SORN can be retaxed. The vehicle would therefore have to be kept offroad for the 5 days. This is why we thought it easier to wait until the tax expired to change the keeper.IF THIS POST HAS BEEN HELPFUL - PLEASE CLICK ON THANKS :j0 -

For the first 13 years & six months of its life it was owned by an elderly man who had only done 27487 miles and had FSH with his Vauxhall Dealer. (An average of 2036 miles a year). The car was in mint condition and came with 12 months MOT. No one had ever sat on the back seat! Just over 13 months later, it has done 32705 miles, is still in mint condition and drives like a new car. True, it now shows 3 keepers but with the last 2 being from the same family I doubt that this will have any effect on the resale value. However we have no intention of selling in the forseeable future. It's not often that you find such a car but it's great when you do. We bought it from Garage and it came with 3 month's warranty. We paid slightly over the book price for it, £1500 but it was worth every penny and is one of the best 2nd hand cars that we have ever purchased.
So this car has only been used for very short journeys for the first 13 years of its life. This is considered intense use by car manufacturers and due to the engine never fully getting up to temperature it would need an oil change every 6 months. This is unlikely to have been done as people very rarely do this and sometimes even don't do the yearly service because they think it has done so little miles.
If you think this is a positive about car then unfortunetly you are very mistaken. The fact that you paid over the odds due to the low mileage makes it even worse.4_Pete's_Sake wrote: »If you re- read my first comment about her car you will see that she had it SERVICED and MOT'd. She does the basic checks and I do additonal checks when she comes home. Perhaps you get under your car every few days to check everything. If so good luck to you.
Nobody gets a first in Veterninary by your proposed method, your suggestion is ludicrous in the extreme.
The point I was making earlier about maintaining the car is that if the car starts making a strange noise and cash is very tight then is she likely to go to the garage and pay £40+ an hour for a diagnostic or leave it until it becomes a "problem". Is she likely to change the tyres at 3mm or run them down to 1.6mm and beyond?.
Also I don't see any reason why someone couldn't get a first in veterinary on a part time course. Are you saying that everyone who does it part time never get a a first, that suggestion seem the ludicrous one. I know they are part time course and I know from experience if you work in the industry your studying it takes less effort and study to get a first.0 -

I've already told you that it came with FSH at Vauxhall, so cannot understand why you suggest that this might not have been done? Clearly your attention to detail is lacking and this is very important if you own a car!! Hopefully someone else does the checks on your car?
You have failed to mention the fact that it is impossible to know how any used car has been driven and looked after. Therefore I can only assume that you are stinking rich and only ever buy new cars.
The car came with 8mm on each tyre and having only done just over 5k since we bought it, all the tyres are way above 3mm. My daughter even has the correct instruments to check the tyre pressure and to measure the depth. Also if the car began to make a strange noise she would let me know immediately so that I could determine what needs to be done. However in the time that we have had it, it has not made any strange noises and in fact apart from the cost of Oil for the 6 monthly oil change, the recent MOT and Service was the first expenditure that we have had on the car since its purchase.
I can assure you that the car was worth every penny that we paid for it and you don't need to worry yourself about by decision making.
You clearly have no idea of the kind of demands that are placed upon students on a veterinary degree course. Any Veterinary Surgeon would agree that trying to get a first whilst working Full Time, even in a position such as a Veterinary Nurse is totally ludicrous. Your idea created much laughter by all at the large veterinary practice where my other daughter works as a fully qualified Vet.
Perhaps you also need to go back to School to brush up on your spelling and grammar. Unfortunately you spelt unfortunately as "unfortunetly" and made several other grammatical errors, which I hope you will be able to locate if your read over your post.
If you'd stop going on about a first class veterinary then you might get some better responses, no one cares about that and it's not relevant.0 -

A full service history at Vauxhall will not include a 6 monthly oil change. So your attention to detail must be lacking because you obviously havnt even bothered to read the book.4_Pete's_Sake wrote: »Perhaps you also need to go back to School to brush up on your spelling and grammar. Now you are really getting petty. An informal writing style is suited to this forum and one spelling mistake doesn't bother me. Your post is full of double spaces so you don't even have even basic control of a keyboard, nevermind spelling and grammar.
I also agree with the poster above; your attitude of "my daughter can't possibly work because she needs to study continuously to get a first" is getting quite boring.0 -

Just think what will happen to the daughter if she doesn't get a first?
It's an interesting perspective from the OP, his daughter is obviously the first in the family to go to university and so there is little knowledge of the way higher education works.0 -
From your OP4_Pete's_Sake wrote: »We then waited until just after midnight on the day that that it expired and then taxed the car from the first day of the next month using the online form at https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-taxLater the same day we completed the Online Change of Registered Keeper form at https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle (This needs to be done between 0700-1900 hours.
Why don't you do the transfer on the 1st as step 1
then step 2 new keeper buys tax.
It would still work.0 -

Are you sure about that? Because if you are talking about the second (or third or fourth) daughter who has got the Corsa, the subject of this thread... I think you will find that you are wrong.
Amazing people talk off topic to an OP about vegetables and then tell the OP that because OP essentially keep replying to the posts about said vegetables..... that the OP is boring them.
You could not make it up :rotfl:0 -

If that comment is aimed at me then you need to re-read what i actually said:I also agree with the poster above; your attitude of "my daughter can't possibly work because she needs to study continuously to get a first" is getting quite boring.
Even though I have mentioned I have seen many places that offer part time course the OP still maintains that only people who don't work can achieve a first. Apparently his other daughter and all the people who work at the vets there also found this comment amusing. Sounds like their entire family have this elitist attitude and just because they arnt clever enough to do it then they think nobody can.
I have no problem in having a sensible discussion about this subject with the OP. But when the OP thinks their daughters are the most intelligent people in the world and if they can't do something nobody can, then I find it quite boring indeed.0 -

OP decided to go off piste, no indication that any siblings went to uni or not, just the posting style suggests a parent who decides their child is unique and special.0
