  • I would use the tomato puree and spread a fairly thin layer over the base with a sprinkling of herbs. Or you could crush some garlic into it first for added flavour. Then your toppings, then sliced or grated mozzarella. It will take about 15 minutes or so. There should be instructions on the packet.

Or you could whizz the tinned tomatoes, then reduce them down with some garlic and herbs for a nice thick pizza sauce.
May all your dots fall silently to the ground.

I chuck a tin of toms (chopped normally, it's easier), some puree and a generous pinch of herbs into a pan and reduce it down till it looks like a thick tomato sauce.

You basically want it thick enough that it doesn't slide off the base.

Then just add topping and cheese and throw in the oven till it looks done and the cheese has all melted, probably about 20 minutes. If I was putting something raw on the topping like bacon, I'd probably grill it first so I knwo it's cooked all the way through.

I use tomato puree and pasatta, dried oregano and basil, plus fresh garlic too if I have no work the next day lol.

Mix in a dish then spread onto the pizza base.

Cooking wise - gas mark 6 middle shelf, 15-20 mins, but check on them to ensure they don't burn.

  • Just to update you, I went with the lazy option and spread them with tomato puree, then topped them with cheese, mushrooms, ham and tomato. They were scrumptious  and have definitely put me off the fatty frozen ones!

I've decided to set myself a challenge to make 3 pizzas for less than £5. That was the offer that was on Delicias, but they've stopped it now.

When I've made pizza before, the bases were all a funny shape etc, and I used tomato puree which is quite expensive (isn't it?). Is there a cheaper topping?

Can anyone give me any tips? Plus I would like to freeze them as these will be our easy, throw in the oven meal after work. Can you freeze homemade pizzas?

Plus they have to have meat on which I know will up the budget. Is it possible?

For topping I use can of chopped tomatoes, garlic, couple tbsp tomato puree and italian herbs. Heat until the toms have broken down a bit and spread over pizza. Have used ready made bases in the past but will be trying to make them myself tomorrow. Wish me luck! Punky x

I've never made a pizza completely from scratch before :o but I tend to buy pitta breads and use those as a base (24p for 6 Tesco Value ones, I think).

I have been using tomato puree with garlic powder as a base but, yep, it does take quite a lot of puree to cover the bases. I have thought about using a tin of tomatoes and blending them, but this might be a bit runny? Not sure how to thicken it up?

Mushrooms, onions and other veg are quite cheap to chop up and use as toppings (not that I like mushrooms or onions  but OH does). If you get reduced off-cuts of cooked ham, chicken, pork etc from the deli counter at supermarkets, this is a cheap way of having meat as toppings. My tesco regularly reduces bits to between 15p-45p. I've even had some for 5p.

HTH (and sorry for butting in with a question of my own!)
