Indeed. £99 for a window seat to LA.

but last weekend we were unable to change seats upon check in for free, it would have been £11 each, so we stuck with what we were allocated.
Not my experience. Allocated seats when checked in, but then asked if we could change when check-in luggage. As it was, the only places left were not as good as kept what had been allocated but the choice was offered for free.

    From the BA Web site:-

Whether seat selection is free or costs extra depends on a number of factors, including the type of ticket you purchase, your class of travel and your personal circumstances.

Unless you have booked a Basic ticket (economy, hand baggage only), you can reserve your seat for free when check-in opens (24 hours before departure).

With a Basic ticket (economy, hand baggage only), you can either

pay to reserve your seat from the moment you book until check-in opens, or
we’ll allocate you a seat for free when check-in opens. You can then pay to change to a different seat, although your choice may be limited.

  • Thanks all - makes sense previously I had booked with luggage, this was the first time I've flown on a basic ticket!
I'm going business in a couple of weeks with them and its showing to charge a reservation now, so will wait until we check in - although less bothered where I'm sat on that flight.
