So, it may cost another £60 or so for 4 of us, but as a percentage of a total holiday cost of say £4k, it's insignificant.

I refuse to pay to select a seat on a plane and don’t mind not sitting with my wife for a few hours. What really annoys me is the cost to book such seats. This is usually around £11 per seat each way so for two people that adds £44 to the cost of a holiday. Imagine a family with several children and what it would cost them just to endure their children are not placed next to someone who may be undesirable or may not wish to sit next to a child. Especially if the child keeps wanting to go and see it’s parents. How are you supposed to buy drinks and snacks for people sitting around the plane? As I said I don’t mind and don’t pay but my last trip we were allocated seats apart despite the fact that there was an empty seat next to my wife. Was this just spite on behalf of the airline? I urge everyone NOT to pay for a seat unless you need legroom then maybe the airlines will make prices more reasonable. I would be willing to pay a tenner in total but not per seat each way. Grrr
If you don't mind sitting apart from your travelling companion, why does it annoy you about the cost to do this?

We don't mind sitting apart so the cost of it is irrelevant to me. No 'Grrr' from me regardless of the cost.

Each party travelling have the option to choose whether they wish to pay to sit together or play the odds of being separated.

I know this is a money saving site but as others have said the price of seat selection compared with the total holiday cost is a very small percentage as an add on plus people complain about the price and think nothing of spending a small fortune in the airport prior to departure,a pint is £6 in Newcastle airport which is our nearest and the numberof people we have seen order food and leave most of it because of the quality is eyewatering ( we take our own food but do buy beverages )

  • isnt it free to select seats 48 hours before meaning you can just about log in and choose seats with your travel companions.

So you're not really going to be placed with strangers. I would go online exactly 48 hours before the flight and do this.

Different airlines do things different ways. Many will still charge you to select a seat. Often increasing cost nearer to departure dates.

No. It doesn't work like that. All airlines have a different routine, which are fully explained when you book.

Easyjet as an example. If you haven't paid for seats when booking, you can do at any time using Manage my Booking on their website.

If you still don't want to pay, the Easyjet online Check-in opens 30 days before departure. You will have been automatically allocated seats free of charge. If you don't like those seats then while checking-in online you can pay to change your seats, but your choice will be limited.

But like I said one hat doesn't fit all.

Can't see the problem. They could add it to the cost of the holiday, the airlines that say it's "free" probably do this anyway, you wouldn't notice it then.

But then people who don't mind not being seated next to their travelling partner would have no choice except to pay for it.

I may be wrong but I'd have thought that most people would want to be able to choose which optional extras are important to them.

    Same as in-flight meals.
    And hold luggage.

And not everyone travels who travels on a plane is going on holiday.
