So the Catalonia news is just on, the independence party edged it, the Spanish PM seems to have 'done a May'.

Is there a malaise creeping across the EU?
    - First UK Brexits
    - Germany fails to form a govt due to many extremist MPs getting in
    - Austria forced to form a coalition with Nationalist extreme right wing party
    - Spain in Catalonian independence crisis
    - Nearly forgot Poland, being sanctioned by EU on it's right-wing ruling partys disregard for rule of law.

Now tell me the above is not part of a pattern.
The UK looks like a paragon of common sense compared.

And don’t forget Corsica, which seems to have had a nationalist revival.

Several EU countries have suspended Schengen because of terrorism concerns. I’m surprised this doesn't get more publicity. Hamish denied it because he hadn't been stopped crossing borders but I saw checks recently when crossing from France into Germany near Strasbourg. It's fairly inconspicuous but it's definitely happening.

Border control was reintroduced between Austria and Italy recently, which was irritating for the locals as the many German speakers on both sides of the border have relatives on in each country. Bit like Ireland, really. Groan.

Looks a lot like the politics of difference are to the fore. The UK is part of that trend - not separate from it.

The UK is a bit different. Due to first past the post, we don't have one nationalist MP while Germany, Austria, Poland and France now have many. Instead, our pressure release valve was Brexit.

I have to admit to just not getting it though; it gets my across the borders I need it to so I don't care what it looks like.

Precisely my view. I actually prefer the size and soft cover as the old ones were too big. When I travel I keep it on me all the time so I’d hate to go back to the old version (not that that’s on the cards as far as I know).

As certainly is the US, so hardly a European issue, more one for "The West" in general.

Certainly at least some of it of it represents fallout from the GFC, and globalisation

Pretty much agree with that, given I will now often be carrying an EU passport as well as a UK one I would like one in a similar size format for convenience sake, in so much as I care at all (which isn't too much!).

Looking at my renewal date I will be getting the current design when I renew anyway

An inordinate amount of Remainers getting their knickers in a twist over the return of the blue passport it has to be said. The level of vitriol on Twitter is bordering on the pathological.

On the radio this evening: EU is well advanced in it's plans for British passport holders to have to register ETIAS style and pay a fiver to enter what's left of the EU in 2020 or so.

Assuming that's true then I'm fairly sure that this

is not going to happen. The UK will have to impose a reciprocal scheme (to include the standard ETIAS-type checks, why are you visiting, where are you staying) on EU visitors to the UK.

Why? 'Cos UK voters will insist on it.

Please don’t make these false allegations of Country’s suspending Schengen.
If the site of security leads you to believe this sort of thing what do you make of armed police officers at Heathrow and Victoria Station.

I really thought that false claims were a thing of the past. I thought we were all getting more grown up about our posts. I am certainly trying.
There will be no Brexit dividend for Britain.
